Title: Blizzard Friday/Weekend
Post by: NHSparky on December 19, 2008, 07:12:22 AM
I only included weekend because now they're saying Sunday's snowstorm will be WORSE than this:

Quote
Issued by The National Weather Service
Portland, ME
3:38 am EST, Fri., Dec. 19, 2008

... WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 7 AM EST SATURDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GRAY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 7 AM EST SATURDAY. THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

THIS WILL CAUSE HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS... BEGINNING THIS AFTERNOON. MOTORISTS SHOULD DRIVE WITH EXTREME CARE AND ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION.

More Information
... HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST NEW HAMPSHIRE AND SOUTHWEST MAINE THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO TONIGHT...

.SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE THROUGH THIS EVENING BEFORE TAPERING OFF AFTER MIDNIGHT. THE HEAVIEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE ACROSS MORE SOUTHERN AREAS WITH AMOUNTS DROPPING OFF QUICKLY FURTHER NORTH.

A TOTAL OF 6 TO 10 INCHES IS EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHERN MOST PORTIONS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE TO INCLUDE CONCORD AND PORTSMOUTH. JUST TO THE NORTH OF THIS REGION A TOTAL OF 4 TO 8 INCHES OF SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED. THIS INCLUDES PLACES LIKE LEBANON, LACONIA AND ROCHESTER IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND SANFORD AND KENNEBUNKPORT IN MAINE. THESE AREAS ARE UNDER A WINTER STORM WARNING.

Good thing I didn't bother blowing out my driveway yesterday.  X-Mas party was good, what I got to attend of it.  Boss is a workaholic and doesn't understand why we're not all also workaholics.  Then again, he's not hourly.  I am, which explains why I'm here on my off Friday.  I'm such a whore for the dollars of late.

Time to hit the grocery store on the way home and get some BBQ foods, firewood, and LOTS of beer.  No reason to go out this weekend.

The Sandhills of Nebraska are coated with snow this morning.

It's like Noah's flood, but with snow instead of water.

I haven't checked the forecast; that's the situation as of right now.

We have about 9-12 on the ground right now and most of the state has shut down for the day.

'Nother 1-3 coming down by tomorrow on top of this.

Winter Wonderland.

My wife is pissed she's missing work and forgot to bring her secure laptop home so she can't work here. :-)
She might have to actually relax today.

We just got our power back Wednesday night (lost it last Thursday night in the worst ice storm our region has seen in history), we are getting a foot of snow today through tomorrow, and a classic nor'easter on Sunday.

Christmas shopping?   Are you kidding me right now?

We got Noah's flood down south guys. This thing is no joke judging by the amount we are getting here in the central OH. Been a downpour since I got up at 6am.

Have you ever considered that God might actually really hate the midwest?

Nah.

I bitch about the weather a great deal, but I'm always consciously aware there's a greater purpose to the weather in the midwest and Great Plains.

Weather builds character.

With the 12 FEET of snow we had last winter, and as cold as it is this year thus far, I've got all the "character" I need, thanks.  But such is the inescapable fact of life.  Like excresence, weather happens, and sometimes stinks quite badly.

With the two storms this weekend they are saying after Christmas.   Princeton has another week or so before they will have power back at 100% -- but Wachusett freaking Ski Mountain opened for business.   That is the last thing Princeton needs is tourists on their roads.   I am completely disgusted with the family that owns that mountain -- they should offer their resources to their town.   Outrageous.

Holden is 49% with power -- they have their own light company which is moving at a snail's pace.
Sterling is 90% with power -- the other 10% won't have it for another week as they abut Princeton and were too heavily hit.
Paxton and Rutland are moving forward quickly now with restoration.   We have been blessed with National Grid workers/trucks from all over the country here working furiously to get power restored before the storm hits.   There were 50 National Grid trucks from all over here in my town yesterday.

National Grid workers left their homes to come here to help us -- some sleeping in their trucks and working 16-18 hour days.   We can never repay them for their generous donation of time.   Yeah, they are getting overtime -- but it is damn cold here, and the working conditions are horrible.   Whatever they are being paid is not nearly enough.

Rainy day here...nice and cloudy and dark...good napping weather!

Three more presents to wrap today...a baseball bat (for the 13 yr old) (damn, those things are EXPENSIVE for the bigger kiddos!), a very cool pair of Chuck Taylors for the girls child, and a set of catcher's gear (that I got for 1/2 price...score!) for the young one.

SUpposed to be rainy all day today ,nice tomorrow, then "wintery mix" on Sunday ,with possible ice Sunday night, then light snow Monday.  I'm hoping for a snow day Monday.  How totally retarded is it that the kids are supposed to go to school on Monday?  That's it..just Monday.  :banghead:

Tonight I'm planning a trip to the grovery store, and I'm taking my daughter over to her boyfriends house for a bit.  Yes, she is no longer denying that he is her boyfriend.

Fun times!

From the department of monumentally stupid undertakings we are taking the 4wd into town so my wife can retrieve her laptop.

Apparantly nobody gets paid if she doesn't do paperwork.

Pray for us, lol.

Ahh..it has progressed! Good to here not a boyfriend is now a boyfriend.  :-)

Our weather is similar out this way, Flame. Between pms and the rainy, overcast skies I had zero energy in my workout this am. :p

I can't believe the kiddos still have school on Monday, but seem to recall that when I was in school in Maryland as a youngster we would also have school right up until about the 23rd or so, so there were many of those half weeks or day or two like that, especially if the holiday was at the end of the week. I could be wrong though, I'll have to ask my mother when she gets home.

My kids will be done today. I plan to grocery shop tonight without the kids in tow and hopefully when the rain stops(I hate loading the vehicle up when it's pouring out). After that, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Shopping will be all done and I'm ready to just enjoy the time off with the kids.

What do you mean...the sky is clearing over there???

We're up to 63, but we've had intermittent sprinkles all morning. Had "lightness" for all of about 15 minutes around 9am. It just keeps getting darker and darker out. Looks like it's about 5pm. We've had wind in the upper 20's....which I recognize is not a big deal out where it's flat and not many trees....but here, it's alot. Especially with all the rain we've had and trees with shallow root systems.....makes it easy for trees to fall down and go boom.

Just found out that my closing that was to happen on Monday probably won't happen until after the first.
That is not a good thing. :(  On the other hand....it will happen....which is a good thing.

asdf....y'all made our local news at noon....with your weather!

To all of you traveling about today .....please be careful and mindful of the other drivers. Stay safe <<<<hugs>>>>

No more cats or dogs, thanks.  Nothing I need right now, but thanks for the offer.  I hope it's not going too badly when/if they cut us loose from the shop today.  It's strange--the southern part of the state is getting hit worse than the north.  They're only getting a few flakes to a couple of inches.  We're looking at a foot today, and maybe another foot Sunday/Monday.

I hope you shopped for the weekend and are prepared to hunker down for a few days.
Snow is beautiful coming down...I just didn't appreciate traveling in it.  I lived in Westchester County, NY...but worked in Manhattan...it was not a happy commute on snow and slush covered streets.

Still, snow is beautiful, majestic...and I really do miss it despite my smart ass florida updates.. :-)

The ice storm we just had was worse than the blizzard of '78.

This is only a concern here because of the residuals from the ice storm that have not been repaired.   Two storms dumping on you when you rely on a generator for heat S-U-C-K-S at the highest level.

This thing could actually end up replacing my laptop.  It looks like it could be the perfect monitor for a desktop computer, and its fully capable of that too. It looks much more attractive in person than it did on the Best Buy site.  As soon as I figure out the new cell phone camera and sending to my e-mail, I'll post a pic.

I'm also without a coaxial cable, so the tv won't see any action until later on... I'm resting right now, and will run up to Target later to grab one.

My family is on the road for Green Bay here in an hour or so.  My wife's family Christmas party. I'm on call till next Friday and can't go. :(

Gonna deliver some presents to the local shop folk in town here and get the huge pack O' cards out in the mail.

We had about 1/2 inch of solid ice on the ground early Friday morning when I got out of work (just after midnight), and it sucks working in phone repair. The storm is spread nationwide and we've had some outages in Indiana, Ohio, Nevada, and Washington because of it.

Today it's supposed to get down to a windchill of -20. FUn.

2-6 inches of snow inbound and strong winds that are going to drop the windchills to 25-30 below.

I just popped a load of beef and porta bella mushrooms into the mini crock pot for dinner later.

It's quiet.

It's... too quiet.

I have a new movie called "Zombie Diaries" (British flick) that I am going to watch and I will probably order the Michal Rapaport movie "Special" on pay per view later. It looks fantastic.  It's about a guy who trys this experimental depression drug that he thinks gives him super powers.

I hate to work in the yard....I like to shop.

This morning at 7:45 ....I was outside planting pansies. That led to cleaning out a couple of flower beds and trimming branches off of the crepe myrtle trees. The other half came home from early morning Mass....told me he thought he was going to have a heart attack seeing me work out in the yard! ( :hammer:)....worked out there until 10:15.  Thank you very much!

Went to the Mall, Target and the grocery store this afternoon in the rain. A gazillion rude people out there.  :censored:

Should have stayed home and worked in the yard.....  :banghead:

It was 58 at 7:30 this morning.....high tomorrow is supposed to be 32....all these puddles are gonna freeze.... :(

Looks like my parents are going out of town for the rest of the holiday.  I'll be speding Christmas alone.  I'm fine with that... I wasn't really looking forward to dragging my butt over there on Christmas morning.

Dinner (http://wanderingchopsticks.blogspot.com/2007/11/thanksgiving-dinner-for-1.html) might be interesting.
