Title: Amaretto
Post by: Miss Mia on December 18, 2008, 07:36:31 PM
A co-worker gave everyone Mason jars of homemade amaretto today.

Okay, so my question is...what the heck do I do with it?  Is it supposed to be mixed with something?  Just over ice?

Just drink it on the rocks.

It is pretty sweet, so have it as an apertif.

Try this, doll.

The Amaretto Sour.

1 1/2 oz amaretto almond liqueur
1 - 2 splashes sweet and sour mix

Pour the amaretto liqueur into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Add a splash or two of sweet and sour mix, and shake well. Strain or pour into an old-fashioned glass, garnish with a maraschino cherry and a slice of orange, and serve.

Good suggestion BadCat.  :)

I've never really drank much amaretto, but this is a Christmas present, so I have to drink it.   :-)

Toasted Almond

1 part amaretto
1 part kahlua
1 part milk or cream

or frozen variety...one scoop vanilla icecream in place of milk and add a little bit of crushed ice before you blend.

I think when mixed with cola, it tastes like Dr Pepper.

I used to drink some kind of shot, after I was shot, that had amaretto in it....

I can't drink the stuff. :(

In college I killed half a bottle one night and got so freaking sick the next day that I still wanna hurl to this day when I smell it.  Ditto tequila.

Mia, I'm not that crazy about it, but if you drink Teh Nog during the holidays, you might try mixing some in that, the sweetness and nutty taste should go well with the spice in it.  If you like coffee drinks, it should go pretty well in them too.  Drinking it neat or on the rocks doesn't sound too appealing to me, the sweetness of it isn't what I'm looking for when I take my medicine that way, but to each his or her own.

 :cheersmate:

OH, and how could I forget, one of my favorite shots in college..

B-52's

1/3 amaretto
1/3 Baileys
1/3 Kahlua

Goes down real smooth, so it will really screw you up...They ARE addicting.

I still happen to like B-52's....they hadn't been "invented" when I was in college   :thatsright:

Amaretto is good in hot cocoa with whip cream and a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg. It's an almond base flavor, so it works in coffee or tea too.

I love hot cocoa with creme de menthe served with whipped cream....takes me back to my skiing days....as I mainly hung out in the lodge and let my friends do most of the skiing. :-)

WTF???  Doesn't anyone just do a shot and a beer anymore?

Nah, first it became "Car Bombs", then "Irish Car Bombs", then the foo-foo stuff...sheesh.

Although I did have a "Cherry Bomb" the other day.  Drop a shot of Three Olives Cherry Vodka in a glass of Monster.  Yum.

In the spirit of Metrosexuality I will admit to absolutely craving those "Non Martini" Martini concoctions.

Plus I live for Mohitos.

But I also drink straight scotch and bourban.

Chick drinks.

Men order a beer and either: Vodka (neat or straight) or Whiskey (ALWAYS neat).

Agreed.  Although I'd think more whiskey, bourbon or scotch as opposed to vodka for the menfolk.  Then again, the occasional vodka tonic is delish :)  I'm such a "frat bro", I totally hit the Jaeger shots.  lol  It's disgusting, but it'll do the trick!!

Chicks are exempt from the "chick drink" law.  Just like the exemption you hold for chick flicks.

My drink  d'ua jour largely depends on my mood or the drama (or lack of drama) in my life....

When I am feeling happy, and things are going good, it's girly drinks and mixes.
When I am having "issues", it's Cognac.  Nothing else will do. :-)

Equal parts amareto and Bourbon over ice in a collins glass, add Coke and you have a "Dr. Pepper" the bar drink

Equal parts amaretto, Sloe Gin, Sothern Comfort and a bit of orange juice make an "Alabama Slammer"

I like amaretto with coffee myself.  :cheersmate:

Yeah, but that Portwood aged Balvenie is for a special occasion.

The "normal" Balvenie runs about $31.

That it is.

That 15-year-old batch is in the price range. I'll see if they got it at the place I usually get scotch at. They have a fairly large selection.
