[Wed 11:14] <DefiantSix> I'm in BIG need of your prayers people.  My wife was in an accident yesterday morning taking the boy to school.  She's in ICU with bleeding in her brain, a broken jaw, a partially collapsed lung, bleeding from her spleen and a broken pelvis.

Please keep him and his in your thoughts and prayers and help him stay strong until he can get his wife home again.

God Bless D6. :(

D6's wife is going into surgery at 17:00 ( I assume that is MT) to repair her jaw. They are estimating 5 hrs.

She has developed pneumonia in the collapsed lung, but that was anticipated and they were prepared for it. The bleeding in her brain has stopped.

One of her kidneys was ripped away. I'm not sure if it has already been removed, but if not, it will be...leaving her with just one.

Their little boy has a bruised cheek and ankle, scared, but otherwise ok. Thank God for his car seat.

Both are expected to be ok.

They were hit broadside into the driver side door by a 1 ton pickup truck.

I know all of you all will continue to pray for them.....all of us praying together will bring them through it.

(info was posted over at milnet and thought you all would want to know)

Just checked over at milnet...here's the latest....from tonight....keep in mind....these time are ET and D6 is MT...so there is a 2 hour time difference.....

[Fri 20:40] <DefiantSix> Her nurse was telling me today that the way she's progressing, they're running out of things that an ICU can do for her, so she'll likely be moved to a regular hoszpital room after the weekend.
[Fri 20:38] <DefiantSix> They've been pulling a lot of the support tubes they've had sticking in her (the respirator tubes, the NG tube, suction tubes, the arterial BP catheter, etc).  her face is pretty much free and clear now, except for the trach tube.
[Fri 20:36] <DefiantSix> Just got back from the Hospital.  She's on a trach tube for the time being, but the respirator is shut down.  She's breathing a mix of 30% oxygen right now, and using her own lung power to do it.

Latest news from D6....again the time posted is ET and he is MT....I hope he is able to get some rest. And it's good that Lorianne's mom is there to help with their little boy and give D6 support.

[Sun 02:17] <DefiantSix> They're talking about stepping down the size of the trach tube and fitting it with a one-way valve in the next 12-24 hours or so. This new apparatus would function as an inlet airway, but close up when she exhales, permitting her - among other things - to use her voice to communicate again.
[Sun 02:10] <DefiantSix> The spleen probably opened up again during or immediately after her surgery Thursday night.  They had to give her another unit of blood through that night to bring her volume back up.
[Sun 02:06] <DefiantSix> She's looking a lot better today: her color has largely returned, and so she looks less like a side of meat, and more like my wife again.
[Sun 02:00] <DefiantSix> Lorianne's mom gave her the option of having her stay the night with her in the hospital, or they'd take the boy home and put him down and she could have me stay the night with her.  She chose me.

D6 checked in right after I was over there this morning......

[Sun 09:58] <DefiantSix> Her trauma doctor just came through on his rounds this morning.  Says they aren't worried about the severing of her left kidney from the system, and unless the stuff they're looking at changes, they intend to leave it in place.
[Sun 09:51] <DefiantSix> PS, they're leaving the spleen to heal on it's own because - at this point - doing so causes her less pain, and creates fewer opportunities for complications in her recovery than taking it out would, in the doctor's opinion.

That is odd that they can just leave a kidney in there with it not attached to anything.

It must still have a blood supply, so even if it's not working, it's not going to rot inside her.  Hospitals are very aware that intrusions carry a lot of risk!

I've been praying, D6, even if I haven't replied before.  It sounds like your family is on the mend, thank God!!

Yep, I'm thinking it is much like folks with no function on dialysis. My brother is like this. They both have blood supply, but one no longer functions due to diabetes and the other from trauma from a car accident a few years back(sounds similar to what Mrs. D6 is going through).

More prayers going up for this family. I remember my brother's recovery from an accident like this. Long road still for her. prayers up

Let's add a little extra to the prayers, ok Everyone?

Now that Lorianne has had her surgery, the healing pains will begin.....they are often worse than the pain when first injured.

Y'all... <sigh>

I really have no words adequate to the task of expressing how grateful I am for your compassion over this past week.  I'm especially grateful to you Deb, for passing along my shout box notes so that all concerned could be updated.

(I have been pecking out those updates either from a "WebTV" type connection in my wife's room, or from my cell phone.  This is the first opportunity I've had to actually sit down at a real computer (my own, at home) and do this.)

To put the good news of today into one sentence, Lorianne is going to be in a regular old, plain vanilla hospital room come this time tomorrow.  The liklihod is also high that they will reduce the size of the trach tube in her throat.  They tried just adding the valve that would allow her to use her voice today, but the existing tube occupies too much space in her throat, and she was having to work too hard to get it out.  The smaller one(s) will likely be easier.

Yesterday she had physical therapists working with her to get her to sit up on the edge of the bed and stand.  Today, when we went into the hospital room, she was sitting in a recliner chair in her room and had been for 2 hours.  She had - with a little help and reminder to go easy on her left side from her nurses - moved between the bed and the chair on her own using the walker, and back again.  Add to that the fact that she didn't appear so bone crushingly tired - her energy levels are coming back to normal for her - and I was walking amongst the clouds when I left her room this evening to take the boy home.

Extra prayers are always a good thing, but I think that the time has come to turn our prayers to prayers of gratitude and thanksgiving that he has answered the prayers we've been sending up with absolute, no other word to discribe it, miracles on a daily basis.

The Master Healer has been her attending physician this past week, of that I have no doubt, and I could not deny it.

Slack me just noticed D6's need for prayer.....it's 4 am. here on Christmas morning, all is quiet in the house, no one up but me.....it's a good time for a little talk with the man upstairs.

This line got to me...."trach tube in her throat."...and unable to talk...that describes me, 57 years ago this morning.

I wrote this thread before noticing D6's need for prayer.

http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php/topic,19824.15.html

By the time I finished writing it , my thoughts of it being my worst Christmas ever changed to maybe being  my "Best Christmas" ever. While this Christmas is filled with worry and concern for his wife and son, maybe someday D6 will look back on this Christmas as being one of his better ones.

Got one even better this morning:  she got her trach tube reduced to a size 4 and has a one way valve on it now.  With the obstructions out of her way, she called us this morning on her dad's cell phone (he stayed the night with her last night) to wish us a merry Christmas personally.  One of the toughest things she'd had to deal with since the accident, is not being able to communicate with the people around her:  I was frequently her interpreter when she began signinig to us, but I'm not near as proficient in sign language as she is, and so when I kept asking her to slow down, or spell it out, or I wasn't there to tell them what she was saying, she would get so frustrated.  So, when I went in to see her today, and she could talk and tell everyone what she was thinking, I saw a huge weight lifted off her shoulders.

She was also moved out of the ICU today.  She's still got an elevated white cell count that they can't explain and that's the final hurdle she needs to cross before they'll let her go home.  Once the counts come back into a normal range, she's on a 3-5 day short count for home.

Merry Christmas to one and all.

Trach tube is out completely, as of an hour ago.  She passed a swallow test yesterday, and has been on "real food" - as opposed to brownish canned gunk through a feeding tube - since lunch yesterday.  Her first real meal among the living was cottage cheese (hospital cottage cheese: low salt/no taste  :p ), tomato soup and a chocolate shake (and a Giradelli chocolate from her stocking  :uhsure: ).  They're trying to have all remaining tubes out of her - including IV drip lines - within the next 24 hours.

Occupational therapy (the ones testing to see that the head trauma doesn't have any lasting brain damage) just put her to work on a math test (never been her strong suit).  She may be there for the rest of her natural life (and may God have mercy on her soul).

No word yet on the white cell count from her latest CBC, but yesterday she was holding steady at 23,000 yesterday.  It's about double the normal range she needs to be in to start her short clock, but at least that figure is no longer climbing.

Good news D6.  *hugs*

Thanks for the update D6 -- I continue to pray for her continued improvement into full health.

Wooooo HOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

White blood cell count is COMING DOWN now that they're removing the foreign matter (tubes of various sorts) from her body.

WBC count today was 20,000 a 13% drop from yesterday.  Start the short clock, 'cause this keeps up, and she'll be sprung from the hooscow by Friday.  :-)

Great news!!!

How is she doing with eating? Is she not locked tight together?

After living on milkshakes, pudding and mashed potatoes for 8 weeks....it was years before I would eat them again...unfortunately for my derriere....I got over it... :uhsure:

They never wired her jaw shut, because they had to secure the broken pieces with the steel plates.  She started eating real food yesterday at lunch.  Only problem she's run into is that they still have the damned feeding tube in place and are still running 40ml per hour of the canned gunk in through it, so she'll eat a meal, and then the pump will send canned gunk in on top of a meal.  Fortunately, they intend to pull that thing out by tomorrow.

Wow! She is so lucky to not be wired together!!!! I was wired for 8 weeks. If I hadn't lost 3 lower front teeth, I think I would have starved.  My lower right jaw still has like a split apart paperclip holding it together.

Being able to eat, will help her get her strength back sooner and help her to heal.

Once she gets unhooked from everything and can get out of the hospital and home to cozy surroundings, I"m sure you will really see rapid improvement.

Prayers continuing for her rapid improvement.

Lorianne's on the short clock:  24 - 48 hours or so, and she'll have worn out her welcome at the hospital.  We expected that they were going to pull out her feeding tube this morning, but apparently it hasn't been in long enough to build up enough of a layer of scar tissue around it to prevent perotinitis if it were pulled out now.  One month for that, the doctor says; but it won't keep her in the hospital while she waits.

She's able to put more and more weight down on her left leg now, an indication that the pelvis fractures are healing up nicely.  The physical therapists have her walking laps in the hospital corridors behind a walker on a regular basis, and they have a set of stairs that she's been tested on as well.  Me thinks that she won't be as limited in the things she can do as the doctors think once we get her home.  Of course we're not talking jumping right back into her previous routine the moment they check her out of the Hypochondria Hilton, but I was envisioning her spending a lot of time laid up in the bedroom while that pelvis heals, with me bringing her meals up to her, and keeping the boy off of her until that bone knits.  She may be able to maneuver herself up and down our staircase, giving her access to the boob tube downstairs, the computer up in the office, and the refrigerator when the munchie mood strikes.  Thank goodness I've got the permission I need to work from home as necessary so that I can couple keeping my job going with supporting her recovery as necessary.

Anyway, we expect the cripple will be celebrating the New Year in, from the comforts of her own home.

D6 - I'm so happy for both of you! Continued prayers for Lorianne. It's a long road but she's got God carrying her and you holding her hand. Couldn't ask for a better way to come back to being 100%. Take care of yourself. I know how run down you can get caring for someone who is critically injured.

That's great news.

Hospitals suck.  They don't let you get a good night's sleep, coming in at 2am to poke and prod you.

Lorianne was FINALLY discharged from the hospital about 13:00 yesterday.  (Two guesses why I didn't post it at the time...)  She's moving around on a walker like an 80-year old woman, we had 2 1/2 weeks of body oil, grime and dried sweat showered off of her last night, but she slept the sleep of the dead last night in her own bed.
