Person of the Year 2008
Barack Obama

In one of the craziest elections in American history, he overcame a lack of experience, a funny name, two candidates who are political institutions and the racial divide to become the 44th President of the United States.

I doubt that anyone else really got any consideration whatsoever.  Didn't someone from Time's editorial board just become part of Joe "the gaffe" Bidens staff?

Yeah, I had to look it up though to be sure.

Time's Carney Joining Team Obama As Biden Gaffe Goalie? (http://newsbusters.org/blogs/ken-shepherd/2008/12/16/times-carney-joining-team-obama-biden-gaffe-goalie)

Was Time magazine's Jay Carney hired by the Obama transition as Joe Biden's director of communications in order to keep a tight lid on the Beltway's greatest gaffe machine?

Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz reports, you decide:

Quote
Time magazine's Jay Carney, who said over the summer that Joseph R. Biden Jr. is "incredibly prone to say the wrong thing," will soon be in charge of ensuring that doesn't happen again.

OMG!  I can't believe it!  I never saw this coming.  What an honor to be on the cover of Time!

Time magazine won't survive through 2009.

I'm not talking about being abbreviated or truncated; I'm talking about being dead.

If Henry R. Luce were alive, he'd be spinning in his grave.

This will be the 19th time 0bama's been on the cover of Time magazine this year (52 weeks, although maybe they'll be able to squeeze in one more cover).

Time has not been a newsmagazine for some time now.

Time has evolved into an 0bama fan mag.

The problem with that is, there's lots and lots of 0bama fan mags around, and Time's in a saturated field, a market glutted with 0bama fan mags.

Time's not going to make it through 2009.

It's all very sad.

Not to me; at this point, it'll be just one more prostitute over the side, their demise will perhaps allow some oxygen for more honest and honorable publications to thrive.

Honestly though, was there really any other option?  Asides from maybe President Bush, has the media reported on ANYONE ELSE in the entire world this whole year?

Time might as well change it's name to 'The Truth'.

The Soviets used to have a sardonic joke about that...Pravda and Izvestiya were the two main press organs, "Pravda" meaning "(The) Truth," and "Izvestiya" meaning "(The) News."  The saying was that there was no news in "The Truth" and no truth in "The News."

I know, thus my saying they need to change their name. Barry has some very Stalinesque qualities.

From Ed Morrissey over at Hot Air:

Quote
Otherwise, their POY issue only underscores the obvious.  No one dominated this year like Barack Obama, in the US and probably around the world.  That doesn’t connote a value judgment on Obama himself, although it might on the media that promoted him.  It acknowledges the reality of Obama’s impact on 2008, and it also follows a Time tradition of naming presidents-elect as POY.

From Ed Morrissey over at Hot Air:

Good point.  Bush was the Person of the Year in 2000.  Clinton in 92'  Bush 41 wasn't the pick in 88, but he did get it in 90'.  Reagan got it in 80' and 82'.

More relevant to this years pick is that in 1938 it was Adolph Hitler, and in 1939, and again in '42 it was Joseph Stalin.

In 1936, it was the Duchess of Windsor.

Time magazine even in its old days had a habit to sometimes pick the shallow.

Heh heh. It'a not of course. I guess TIME's Person of the Year is a bit like MTV doing best song of 2008 or Us Weekly doing best hair of 2008 etc. (only a little less suspenseful)

If Henry R. Luce were alive, he'd be spinning in his grave.
:rotf:
If Henry R. Luce where alive he'd by banging on the roof of the casket and yelling "Hey! Is anybody out there? I'm not dead!  Let me out!  In the name of God!  Please! I'm not dead!"

And if nobody was around he'd probably start sobbing softly soon after.
