Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Aggie, proposes bill to kill BCS

President-elect Barack Obama isn't the only one who wants to change the way champions in college football are determined.
Obama, who has said he'd like to replace the controversial Bowl Championship Series with an eight-team playoff, was joined in a call for change Wednesday by Rep. Joe Barton of Arlington, a Texas Aggie.
Barton said he's introducing a bill to kill the BCS system, seen by many for years as confusing and unfair.
"College football is more than an exhilarating sport, it's a billion-dollar business," said Barton, R-Arlington. "Despite every effort to fix the problems of the BCS, college seasons still end in sniping and controversy, rather than clear winners and losers determined on the field."
The best way to stop that, he said, is to prevent marketing of a post-season game as a national championship game, unless it is the result of a newly created playoff system.
Although it doesn't lay out how that system would work, the bill does say that all Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams should initially be eligible at the start of every season. The measure is being offered by Barton, Bobby Rush, D-Illinois, and Michael McCaul, a Republican whose district stretches from Austin to Houston.

Off topic: He's not a good guy. He's unfortunately my rep. He personally held up the autism bill in the House after it overwhelmingly passed the Senate a couple of years ago.
On topic: I do agree with getting rid of the BCS though, but why is the government interfering with college football though?

That was my question as well... why is the government getting involved in college football? Silly question, I know... this is the same logic they used to pass the NFA and the '68 Gun Control bill. The materials used to construct guns and rifles pass inter-state before they are produced, therefore they fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government (and Congress) and are subject to their laws. Universities recieve public funding, ergo the legislative branch thinks they have the authority to meddle with BCS.

Politicians have NO reason to be in college football.
With that said, BRING ON THE PLAYOFFS! Finally we'll see two SEC teams going at it for a national championship. :evillaugh:

this is not meant to be a comment for or against, but there is precedent for gov't meddling in college football... TR ordered the formation of the NCAA when there were multiple football deaths in order to put forth rules to ensure safety of the players. not the same as picking the champion, but precedent...
