this will accomplish a couple of things. first, it ensures that Israel will blow the iranians' nuclear facilities to the moon; BHO may be willing to tolerate a nuclear iran, but the israelis aren't as foolish. they actually know how the middle east works. second, it sends a loud and clear message to the entire world that the obama foreign policy team is not only composed of amateurs, but they are actually dangerous. this is called "war through weakness", as opposed to Reagan's doctrine of "peace through strength".
and didn't BHO deride the anti-ballistic missile program during the campaign? didn't he say that he opposed it because it doesn't work? and wasn't cutting it a key piece of funding his programs? and is he going to keep ANY of the promised that he made on the campaign trail?
the guy is making it up as he goes along.
Report: Obama to Offer Israel 'Nuclear Umbrella' Against Iran
U.S. president-elect will offer Israel a strategic pact designed to fend off any nuclear attack on the Jewish state by Iran, an Israeli newspaper reports.
President-elect Barack Obama will offer Israel a strategic pact designed to fend off any nuclear attack on the Jewish state by Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday.
Haaretz, quoting an unnamed source, said the Obama administration would pledge under the proposed "nuclear umbrella" to respond to any Iranian strike on Israel with a "devastating U.S. nuclear response."
Granting Israel a nuclear guarantee would essentially suggest the U.S. is willing to come to terms with a nuclear Iran, the paper reported.
According to the paper's source, Obama's nuclear guarantee would be backed by a new and improved Israeli anti-ballistic missile system. The Bush administration took the first step by deploying an early-warning radar system, which enhances the ability to detect Iranian ballistic missiles.
No immediate comment from Israeli officials or the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv was offered.

Israel has their own nuclear "umbrella", they are more than willing to use it, if necessary.
They don't need one from us.
well, yeah, which makes the whole thing even more stupid. what are these people thinking?

Really...............just jump right on out there and lob a few nukes at Iran.
If you say you will do it they will test you.........................and a Nuclear Iran isn't a good idea, actually a very, bad idea

this is just spectacularly stupid. ANYTHING is better than a foreign policy that involves nuking iran in the future, INCLUDING an out-and-out invasion of the damn place tomorrow.
welcome back to limp wristed foreign policy, ladies and gentlemen. I had almost forgotten what it looked like.

I don't understand what folks are getting their knickers in a bunch about. Ain't nothing new about the US official & unofficial support of/for Israel.
What's different is Obama was against it before he was for it.

an unofficial position is fundamentally different from a public policy, and that is even assuming that there was such an unofficial position, which I tend to doubt.
and stop looking at my knickers. :-)

Oh don't worry; we're gonna get plenty of reminders of what limp-dick foreign policy looks like in the next four years. In fact, I'd dare say that it would be at least as "Seared in your mind" as John F'n Kommie's Christmas in Cambodia.

By the way, it accomplishes one more thing: whether this is true or not, the Israeli press reporting this has just thrown the monkey wrench into the aspirations of The One bending over and grabbing the ankles for Mahmoud Ahmanutjob in the near future.

The State of Israel does a lot of bag work for the USA, at least they used too. That's unofficial policy. SDI now the missile shield has been US goal for years and it's been policy it would be offered to allies of the USA,that would include Israel. More so to restrain Israel than to embolden them.

Well, quit wearing 'em on the outside of your pants. :uhsure:

No shit, they'd be insane to take him up on this. Of course the Israelis are perfectly capable of lying to the US about what they're up to with their nuke program, they've certainly done it before. They aren't above saying "Sure, OK, how much money ya gonna give us?" while pursuing and preserving their own options on the down-low.
