Lane Kiffin introduced as Tennessee’s 21st coach

By BETH RUCKER, Associated Press Writer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Even though Tennessee’s new coach is the youngest one leading a major program, Lane Kiffin has been around football for almost all of his 33 years.

The former coach of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders and son of longtime NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, is five months younger than the previous youngest coach in the Bowl Subdivision, Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald.

“During our process, Lane Kiffin stood out,” athletic director Mike Hamilton said. “He has great football bloodlines and has been part of a strong football tradition since birth.”

Kiffin remembers being surrounded as a child by chalkboards scrawled with defensive plays and spending weekends in pregame meetings with his dad’s teams...

Watched the University announcement at 2pm yesterday, and he seems really intent and fired up about UT football, yet most respectful of Fulmer.

Obviously everyone around here is talking about him.

There was an article on the internet this morning from Tampa's newspaper saying that his father Monte Kiffin, will be coming here too.

Last night's news said he was only keeping four of the current coaches. My neighbor, up the street, was not on the list. :(

Wonder how patient the UT fans will be with Kiffin? Those interviewed on the tv last night and internet posts, ranged from 2 yrs to 5yrs. I think if he hasn't turned the team around in the next 2 yrs....there will be rumblings.

A Monte Kiffin defense is always a good thing.

The biggest challenge for him early, I believe, will be shoring up recruits in the Memphis metro-area. Keeping the likes of Ole Miss, LSU and Arkansas from picking them off.

After losing Dantonio so fast from Cincy, I hope this means the Bearcats get Brian Kelly for another year. (some rumors had him getting the Tennessee job)

Meantime, wish Kiffin and Tennessee well.

We thought Kelly or what's his face from UNC, until we heard he didn't want to leave Chapel Hill, would be asked here, too.

Apparently, Kiffin was the first choice. He left yesterday for a recruit visit to Memphis.

It was pitiful watching the Cobb kid from Alcoa play for KY on Saturday. TN didn't even look at him until he started saying he was seriously considering KY. Kid was playing QB and catching return punts too!!!

Kiffin was in awe of the facilities here, said there was no reason to lose a recruit, except for not trying hard enough to get him.

I think he will be a good change. He certainly has positive attitude.....gorgeous wife too.

Thank goodness.  One less coaching job for my school's coach to be rumored to be headed to.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting he won't take the Washington job, either.

I'm looking forward to yet ANOTHER PAC-10 assistant wash-out in the SEC. Thank GOD it's at UT. BTW, I hear he wants to bring Orgeron on.

We were 3-21 in SEC play under that fool.

Figured he wouldn't be interested in Washington.  As long as Notre Dame doesn't want him, we're probably pretty safe until next year.

Irisheyes.com reported yesterday that Weis will be retained for the 2009 season.

Interesting pick.  He'll probably do well the first couple of years because Fulmer did recruit some quality players, he just wasn't coaching them well lately.  Losing David Cutcliffe really hurt him.  It's funny how a new coach can step into a situation with someone else's recruits and they'll do better than the coach that recruited them would have done.

Otherwise it is about recruiting, and UT has an uphill battle.  There was a time when UT could reach into North and South Carolina and nab some good players.  But with Butch Davis at UNC, Tom O'Brien at NC State, Wake and Duke getting better, along with Spurrier still hanging around and Clemson looking to resurge, it's gonna be tough.  It's not much different than Auburn now that Bama is back to being good.

Auburn and UT are like a woman at a bar who thinks she's a 9, when she's really a 6.

Yeah, I saw that on the ESPN ticker.  By all rights, Weis should be canned, since he has essentially the same record that got Willingham fired.

Hopefully, he will spend more time looking in state and also head out west to look.

First of all.....he has to find a QB. ::)

There's only such much talent in-state.  The State of Tennessee is not really a hot-bed for recruiting, a big disadvantage when the two big teams in your division are in states that are a hot-bed (Florida and Georgia).  UT's roster, as you well know, is usually a hodge-podge of players from all over.

But yeah, a QB would be nice.  I couldn't believe when he got Jonathan Crompton.  The guy played in Waynesville (just west of Asheville) for Tuscola High, and he wasn't that good there.  The best QB's you had in the last 20 years were Peyton Manning and Heath Shuler.  Tee Martin was OK and won you the Nat'l Championship, but that was mainly your running game with Travis Henry and Jamal Lewis, Peerless Price at WR, and a really good defense.

Since we're almost at the very bottom....we only have one way to go.

I really hope he is given a chance. It was nice to see "excitement" from the football coach's voice. For years, when Fulmer has been on his Sunday morning show.....he has shown little to no emotion when talking about specific plays...almost like he was bored. Kiffin had energy and excitement in his voice and demeanor the entire press conference. I hope he keeps that attitude. It may do more to fire up the team and bring it together than anything else, because there has been no cohesiveness - no "team" - at all this year.

:lmao: Sheah, right. You guys are doing to Kiffin what Obama supporters are doing to him. Kiffin hasn't produced one victory in the SEC and was the coach of one of the worst teams in the NFL, the Oakland Gangbangers.
