Title: Obama's small donor base image is a myth, new study reveals

Everybody knows how President-elect Barack Obama's amazing campaign money machine was dominated by several million regular folks sending in hard-earned amounts under $200, a real sign of his broadbased grassroots support.

Except, it turns out, that's not really true.

In fact, Obama's base of small donors was almost exactly the same percent as George W. Bush's in 2004 -- Obama had 26% and the great Republican satan 25%. Obviously, this is unacceptable to current popular thinking.

But the nonpartisan Campaign Finance Institute just issued a detailed study of Obama's donor base and its giving. And that's what the Institute found, to its own surprise.

"The myth is that money from small donors dominated Barack Obama's finances," said CFI's executive director Michael Malbin, admitting that his organization also was fooled. "The reality of Obama's fundraising was impressive, but the reality does not match the myth."

Adding up the total contributions from the same small individuals (in terms of dollar amounts, not their height), the Institute discovered that rather than the 50+% commonly reported throughout the campaign, only 26% of Obama's contributions through last August and only 24% through Oct. 15 came from people whose total donations added up to less than $200.

McCain's campaign refrom bill screwed Repubs; the dumb shit should have realized that limitations on contributions only refers to their party.

Would not surprise me if Obama received donotaions from foreign governments just like Bubba did.

its just possible he wasn't lying, about this anyway.  he just takes whatever Chicago says for gospel and you nkow how gullible he is when it comes to gospel (think Jeremiah Wright is in the same hemisphere as gospel ?)

500,000,000 DIVIDED BY 200 IS 2,500,000. That shows that the idea in was $200 contributions that made the campaign possible is madness. OF COURSE he got illegal money during the campaign, remember that "bundled" money he got from persons who visited the mid-east? That was as illegal as hell.

OH, BTW, Obama's not yet Pres. elect, and it is POSSIBLE, but highly unlikely, that the electors may chose someone else.

Read the comments on the article, it's amusing to see the liberal hate there for the poor man reporting the news.

Not surprising (amusing -- sure) considering the rag we're talking about - The LA Crimes Times.

But Andrew Blogger shouldn't pass off this blog as though it's journalism and we shouldn't look at it as though it were, either. His choice of words, i.e., "Republican satan" weren't exactly unbiased.

All the same, is anybody truly surprised by this?

Yeah, no shit, Sherlock.  We all knew that, but the self-styled "Guardians of public integrity" in the press had an interest in turning over that rock which could only be measured in negative numbers.

How come most of the time his pictures are his right profile?  Even when I see him giving a live speech his head is always to the right.  Some NLP thing?

Because every time they show his left side, he does that face-scratching finger thing.

I wonder if they'll stop showing his right side now?  There's a video at the link showing his facial tic.  :-)

The strain of the long campaign and a frenetic transition period is beginning to wear on the face of President-elect Barack Obama, who has developed a facial tic under his right eye.

The tic on the lower part of his right orbital bone is clearly visible in his recent interview with ABC's Barbara Walters. Campaign insiders say it first emerged during the primary season and has now become chronic.

Don't forget about all the anonymous, undocumented, untraceable donations.

Don't forget all the fake Chinese doners who all sent in the max donation. But didn't have the money or the memory of doing so when asked.
