Swiss likely to approve prescription heroin
Advertisements [?]GENEVA (AP) - Dr. Daniele Zullino keeps glass bottles full of white powder in a safe in a locked room of his office.
Patients show up each day to receive their treatment in small doses handed through a small window.
Then they gather around a table to shoot up, part of a pioneering Swiss program to curb drug abuse by providing addicts a clean, safe place to take heroin produced by a government-approved laboratory.
The program has been criticized by the United States and the U.N. narcotics board, which said it would fuel drug abuse. But governments as far away as Australia are beginning or considering their own programs modeled on the system, which is credited with reducing crime and improving the health and daily lives of addicts.
Swiss voters are expected to make the system permanent Sunday in a referendum prompted by a challenge from conservatives.

1. I fully agree with this idea.
Looking back on my own long-time addiction, I truly believe the only really bad thing about heroin is the crowd one has to deal with due to the illegality of the drug.
If I could go to a clinic and get a fix, I would still be doing it. Methadone sucks.

6. Yep.
I never had any other problems with it, and I did it every day - wake-up to nod-out - for years. Unlike coke or speed or 'ludes, I never did anything crazy while fixed. And I am not one to practice moderation in anything.
I would love to substitute dope for the alcohol with which I medicate myself, nowadays. I lose too many big chunks of my days, now. I can never remember what I had for dinner the night before, or remember going to bed. That was never a problem with heroin.
Heroin is a good thing, because being an alcoholic is just too damn difficult.

He doesn't actually have to go there, just take enough mind-altering drugs to convince himself he IS there. I think he must read the entertainment section of the Chronicle, see who's playing and then start concocting a story.
Speaking of the Chronicle, when I was in college I had to have my Herb Caen fix every morning...of course, I never met him, though TiT probably dated his daughter or something. Long before I started reading him, Caen coined the term "beatnik", no doubt after witnessing Daddy-O TiT doing a piece of performance art with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and other hipsters at the Paramount Theater. He (Caen, not TiT...I know it's hard to imagine something TiT didn't do) also coined the term "hippie". That, of course, was after seeing TiT jamming with Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and a couple of the cast members from the musical, "HAIR". I believe this was when TiT was stateside after being injured taking on an entire Viet Cong regiment as the sole member of SEAL Team 6. None of the Viet Cong survived.
I did have my own brush with greatness, though. My friend Robin had a huge crush on Dana Carvey...he was only known locally when I was in college. She used to drag us around to comedy clubs where he was performing as often as we would go...it was notoriously easy to get into places without an ID back in the good old days. Anyway, there was this comic showcase at the Cotati Cabaret (at least I think it was there) with about 5 comics...Dana Carvey, Michael Pritchard, Bobby Slayton, maybe even sexpat's ex though I don't remember who the other 2 were for sure. Anyway, we got there early enough that we got a table right up front and after he performed, Dana Carvey actually came and sat at our table for a few minutes and had a drink. Why he would want to bother with a bunch of airheaded college girls I don't know, I don't think any of us were even 21 at the time. I thought Robin was going to faint and fall out of her chair. Unfortunately, I don't have any glamorous stories about being asked to write comedic material for him despite my obvious talent (I did, after all have a scholarship from the League of American Pen Women for a thesis I did on the use of fire in 4 of Faulkner's novels...not exactly evocative of raucous laughter I guess), but it is kind of fun to see him on TV and be able to say, "I met him once, had a drink with him and everything."
