[EDIT -- 8:26 AM. I am changing the reporting and headline slightly to more cautiously reflect what our sources are telling us. Matthews, we have strong reason to believe, is hiring staff for a run at the Senate, although there have certainly been candidates in the past who have staffed up but subsequently elected not to run. -Nate]

Chris Matthews, it appears, is in.

FiveThirtyEight has been hearing for some time that Matthews is serious about running for the United States Senate, but it took a trip to Georgia among the Georgia-runoff-congregated and well-connected Obama organizer throng to confirm.

According to multiple sources, who confirmed the Tip O'Neill staffer-cum-MSNBC host has negotiated with veteran Obama staffers to enlist in his campaign, Chris Matthews is likely to run for United States Senate in Pennsylvania in 2010. Matthews, 62, would run as a Democrat. Arlen Specter, the aging Republican incumbent, will be 80 if he chooses to run for re-election.
Huh? (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/chris-matthews-running-for-pennsylvania.html)

Great, Obama would have his own Monica in the senate.  :rotf:

If this is true then Tweety needs to quit NBC right now.

There's no way in HELL he should have two years of free advertising courtesy of GE.

You are assuming that both tweety and NBC have any shreds of journalistic integrity.

Frankly I doubt they can even spell the words.  :lmao:

I agree - then he can concentrate on making the "Obama administration successful" as a politician, not as a journalist.

I've been doing this too long to even consider that Tweety or NBC know what that term is.

The integrity issue would be a much bigger problem if anyone actually watched his show.  The only thing that keeps it alive is the fact that it is on MSNBC and therefore only with other left-hand-thread nuts for ratings.

Running against Arlen Spector? I don't think the people would give up that much seniority just to satisfy their liberal lunacy. Would they?

Wow this can't be true.  Chris Matthews is such a loudmouth jackass.  Maybe we could get Daryl Hammond as Chris Matthews to run instead?  lol  ;)

Specter is 80. He has had 2 bouts of cancer. The morons in PA (my home state) re-elected Jack-fricking-MURTHA to Congress. They elected Bob Casey, an empty suit, over Rick Santorum. I hate saying this.  He's got suburban Philly roots. He's buddies with the morning Philly talk show guy. Matthews in a walk.

IF this is true, IF he decides to run, there is a point where he MUST quit, but I'm not sure if it's at the point he forms an exploratory committee, or actually declares.

Too bad this is a Blue moon-bat state. In a real contest he would be made a total fool of by any high school debate team dropout.
Instead he will probably walk into the seat.

Is there any way to enforce an intelligence test for elected officials?

wouldn't be needed if we had an intelligence test for voters
