Dr Pepper to Deliver On Its Free-Soda Promise

LOS ANGELES —  Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is a reality.

The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. "Chinese Democracy," infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday.

"We never thought this day would come," Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing, said in a statement. "But now that it's here, all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."

Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.

Dr Pepper is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc.

The one using granulated sugar is. They are the ones who screwed us over using a more "cost-effective" sweetner.

There is a Wal-Mart around here that stocks 6 packs of the sugar kind. I usually get a couple of those everytime I go there.

The site worked fine for me about 12:45 am last evening (and I'm getting the coupon for it in 4-6 weeks  :whatever: ).  I got really lucky, because the site, before that time, and starting 10 minutes afterward, was unavailable.  For once, karma was with me.  :p

Oh, and Walgreen's has Dr. Pepper (and other Cadbury sodas) on sale again.  4 12 packs for $10 (I will never pay more than $3.00 for a twelve pack, so I stock up when the sales are good) plus their 2 liters are on sale for 79 cents EACH! ;)

I can't get it to work -- I get into the site, then it gets me into the Free Site, then I register and it errs out.  They might end up in trouble if they don't extend the deadline.

Do you think that, legally, they could get in trouble? It would be interesting to see how it pans out if that situation occurs (and most likely, it will).

It makes no sense how they could underestimate something like this.  People see the word "free," they flock to it in droves.

Maybe -- you can't offer something, even if it is free, then renege due to technical problems.  But I think this is just going to backfire PR-wise. People will accuse them of never wanting to really do what they said they would do, etc. etc. etc.
