eHarmony to Provide Gay Dating Service After Lawsuit
Online dating service eHarmony has agreed to create a new Web site — "Compatible Partners" — for gay and lesbian users, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General announced.
Created as part of a settlement with Eric McKinley, a gay man from New Jersey, the Web site will provide services for users seeking same-sex partners by March 31, New Jersey Division on Civil Rights Director J. Frank Vespa-Papaleo said.
eHarmony, which was founded by Dr. Neil Clark Warren in 2000, said the settlement was triggered by a Law Against Discrimination complaint filed by McKinley against the online service on March 14, 2005. As part of the agreement, eHarmony will pay McKinley $5,000 and will provide him a one-year complimentary membership.
eHarmony — which was not found in violation of the law — also agreed to ensure that same-sex users will be matched using the same or equivalent technology used for its heterosexual clients. It will also post photographs of same-sex couples in its "Diversity" section of its Web site and in advertising materials.

Linda Carlson, of California, sued the online dating service in May 2007, alleging it discriminated against gays, lesbians and bisexuals. Carlson said she tried to use the Web site a month earlier to meet a woman, but was refused based on her sexual orientation. When Carlson wrote to eHarmony to complain, the company refused to change its policy, according to the lawsuit filed on her behalf in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The lawsuit claimed that by solely offering to find a compatible match for men seeking women or women seeking men, the company was violating state law barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Utter B.S. It's not discriminatory. It was a service they simply didn't offer. :banghead:
...just another step toward socialsim. You cannot operate your business as you see fit. You cannot establish your own morals. You will comply.

What the hell happened to "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"?

The ACLU and like types.

Gimme a break! It's not that hard to start your own gay dating service. The radical gays are at it again and they are just as dangerous as WBC. Sometimes I think they are colluding with each other.

If they were found NOT in violation of the law, why cave?

Looks like they settled out of court. I hope a few more liberal organizations get in line and sue them out of existence. Panzies.

I think that this establishes a bad precedent. All of us "normal" people should invade the gay dating sites and make them provide services for us heteros. If they won't comply, we sue them. I could use some cash right now......

eHarmony should change their name to WeLoathFags.com

Are these the same turd burglers et el that insist they aren't trying to change anyones life they just wanna get along .

Yup. They want to be treated just like everybody else, except they aren't just like everybody else.

lars, they are only complying with the court's messed up decision. I'm pretty sure they aren't wanting to cater to gays willingly. I'm kind of pissed that they just buckled to that decision instead of fighting for their values. This is how messed up precedents sneak by. It's cheaper to just pay folks off than to fight for one's values.

As distasteful as this story is, eharmony is looking at this the way that most businessmen do:
It's a business. Morals and what people do with their lives is really none of their affair.
The story states that there will be separation between the "straight" and the "queer" databases. That keeps the straight people safe.
It's simply another way to make money.
Even giving out 10,000 free memberships and providing all the usual technology for the rump rangers won't impact the bottom (no pun intended) line - making money.
The distasteful part in all of this is being compelled to do something because of a legal threat. THAT part would rub Jesus the wrong way.
But I would think all eharmony has to do is form another subsidiary company, slap some sort of "Fudgepackers R Us" title on it, sit back and rake in cash.
The name "eharmony" stays reserved for straight people and most everybody stays clueless about it.
From that standpoint, eharmony stands to make money off this deal -- even though they had to eat crow to do it.

A man walks into a Sherwin Williams store. He walks up to the clerk and inquires about a specific automotive paint that he needs to finsih a restoration job he's working on. He is told that Sherwin Williams does not sell automotive paints.
The man then sues Sherwin Williams because they discriminate against automotive restorers. He demands that they sell him whatever he needs. Sherwin Williams decides to open more stores to sell automotive paints and sees an ROI of about 0.0000000000001 percent instead of telling the man to "STFU....that's not our line of business."

Nice analogy, lug nut, and I agree in principle.
The difference is, of course, that Sherwin Williams paints don't bring somebody's lifelong partner - well, for the most part - into the equation.
It's a question of sensitivity and pain when a company deliberately chooses to interfere with a person's love life by refusing to offer their technology and services for a fair market price.
After all, fudgepackers have GOT to have it tough these days. Hanging out in gay bars is a bit dangerous, you know. They never know when they're going to get a dose of heaven - especially if the condom breaks.
