A St. Lucie County teacher who let her kindergarteners decide whether an autistic child could remain in class has been suspended.

The county school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to suspend Morningside Elementary School teacher Wendy Portillo without pay for one year.

The incident arose one day in May, when a 5-year-old student in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome was referred twice to the principal for discipline problems.

How ironic. Wendy Portillo gets voted out and it is unanimous. Once her suspension is up, she will probably will not want to teach and will have to leave the school and profession for good. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Hey Wendy, don't use your brother's death on 9/11 to garner sympathy. 3,000 other people died on 9/11 and it's America's tragedy, not just the people who lost loved ones.

The teacher's attorney said she will contest the suspension. The boy's mother, Melissa Barton, said she should be fired.

Namby-pamby school board needs to be fired as well. :censored: idiots.

Agreed. Wendy Portillo should not teach period. She must live her life like Survivor. Hello, class is not Survivor. Anyways, let us hope Portillo gets the same harassment that befell Lori Drew. Portillo has a spot in Hell awaiting for her.

She is tenured so she will get her job back.    Unions have completely destroyed education in this country.

That's a shame.  I'd chalk this one up to ignorance.  My son is autistic and had problems adjusting to kindergarten, but our school here was fantastic in helping him adjust.  I couldn't have been more pleased.

Unfortunately, schools like yours are the exception rather than the rule, I'll bet.

I don't care if Alex Barton was autistic or not. When did a classroom become Survivor????????  ::) :mental: What Portillo did is wrong and she deserves to be kicked out from the school and worthy of burning in Hell along side with Adolf Hitler.

Probably, which is sad.  When people hear the word "autism," they immediately think of "Rain Man."  My son's kindergarten teacher had never dealt with a diagnosed autistic child before and expressed her worry at one of his preparatory meetings before the school year.  Nonetheless, despite a rough start to the year (he had several meltdowns), his behavioral plan began to work and was constantly tweaked to fit his needs.  His behavioral problems soon became less and less frequent as he, his teacher and his classmates learned to adjust.  Eventually, they pretty much disappeared altogether.  His teacher was so taken by his personality and ability to learn that he became an absolute joy for her to have in his class.
