Oh my.
This is from about a year and a half ago, but the bonfire's still burning.

Is there really nobody at DU experiencing poverty from the inside?
Nobody jobless? Nobody homeless? Nobody hungry?
The posts in this forum are, for the most part, pretty sterile. Poverty is something that happens to those other people. People who are mentally ill, who are uneducated, people who are alcoholic or have addictions. I guess by that point they've fallen off the internet...

But many of us are only this far away from the same.

Uh-oh. The bobbling primitive's ticked off at Doug's ex-wife:

Maybe it would be good for me to be included in the conversation?
I'm not yet mute, although the day is coming, I'm sure.

5. I imagine the hungry person would spend their money somewhere other than on a cable hook-up, a computer. No doubt there are a few such people who have posted here but without regular access to the internet they are probably not noticed.
I dunno about that.

6. I don't have money for food right now or for June or July rent. Some of the assumptions you're making are wrong. My internet connection is my only way of getting a job, so I'm going to keep that going (which includes phone, electric) before anything else. I have no addictions and I'm not mentally ill, I am well educated, and I applied for "food stamps" 6 weeks ago.
Its interesting to see a couple of people here make fun of those who are poor who fall into the high interest traps that are set for people who have no other option- I have a high interest car loan because I was unemployed for 16 months 2001-2 and thats what happens when you build up debt. You have no other choice.
There's still an enormous stigma attached to being poor. People are repelled by it. They think it must be the fault of the person who has fallen on hard times. Most of all, people think it gives them the right to judge you and say the nastiest things to you- and this is actually quite demeaning.

25. Sadly, the ignorance about poverty is just as prevalent at DU as anywhere else.
I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. As bad as all that is, the worst part is being austracised by those you would think would understand. That hurts more than anything, and is why so many have just given up.
"It's your choice". Doncha just love that middleclass concept?

I've given up trying to explain to people how demeaning it is in this country.
As Michael Moore said at the end of SICKO.... "Who ARE we?"
As things get better for you, I hope you don't forget those still on the bottom and struggling.
Yeah, don't forget the bobbling primitive.

38. I appreciate you replying to so many people here who are suffering!
There is so litte understanding, and that includes on DU.
The system is broken, badly, yet very few understand that.
"Just go to the ER"
"You can get food stamps"
"The help is there, if you just make the effort"
What a bunch of nonsense, and from "liberals" who should know better!
I'm beyond anger, I'm beyond hurt.
I've been here long enough to know it won't change. They don't WANT to get it.
Thank you again.... please keep accepting and supporting people where they are. We all need it!

82. I hear WalMart is hiring. I'm not intending to be snarky...
The people I know who work at Wally World all have good degrees, and had good work histories.
What they are saying is that Wally is now planning on the engineers, etc., who are now losing their jobs to be their future employees.
Great life, eh?
I'm sorry for your anxiety, although you say you aren't too stressed about it yet.
Having lived in my car for a long time now, and no hope, all I can say is good luck to others to not land in my situation.

So she's gone through yet another apartment that wasn't good enough for her or is she still referring to the first (?) one? It's confusing trying to keep track of her many trials and tribulations.
My paternal grandparents knew true poverty, but somehow managed to raise 12 children who worked hard and succeeded in life. My father had a 6th grade education yet became the regional manager for a freight line.
I'm sure some of these folks have problems, but I guess I just get tired of hearing people telling 'poor stories' when they could be using that energy toward bettering themselves. Call me heartless.

And said homeless DUmb**** has Internet access. Yeah, I know, maybe through a library. :uhsure:

She's full of crap about who works at Walmart for the most part. My mother worked there for a while and she is not college educated and everyone she knew there had maybe 'some' college, but no degree. Most were unskilled and had high school educations at best or were retirees who wanted to earn a little part time income OR were disabled folks who evil walmart has never seemed to have a problem hiring.
Now we find out bobbolink is on ssi...sounds to me like she is refusing to retrain herself or go back to work out of fear of losing her ssi status. It's there if you look for it. The reform she wants, I think, is to be able to keep her ssi even if she returns to work at some point.
She's got a bullshit excuse for everything doesn't she? Definitely not a can do attitude. "I'm out of an apartment because it is 'polluted'." "I shouldn't have to eschew internet access and don't because it is in the library"(yes, but arguably you aren't using that FREE taxpayer access to improve your situation--you are just wasting more time sitting on it and bitching while glaring at the hustle and bustle of those around you actually living their lives and providing for themselves). "SSI doesn't pay enough" Well, you know what? It's not supposed to--it's not a retirement plan or even a full benefits disability plan. I expect that its intention was that most people get retrained for something they CAN do and SSI was to help supplement in the interim.
Bobbolink is a classic example of someone who is so mired in their own defeatism she can't accomplish anything. So many excuses...I'm thinking perhaps the payoff is in the attention she gets, even if it is negative, for being the poor cantankerous homeless woman who can't catch a break which means, yet again, another mentally ill person is sitting on skins island untreated and stuck in their own pattern of self-destruction.
For bobbolink, you aren't hurting anyone's feelings there. The only person you are hurting is your own damn self with the pity party, can't do attitude. The bottom line is everyone has to start from somewhere. You might have to live in a crappy, dingy, little apartment for a while until you put together a bit of money to get something better. You ACCEPT help when it comes and don't turn your nose up at it not being good enough. So you are on the bottom--wah--you've spent years crying about it--when it feeling sorry for yourself going to be over bobbolink and you going to start creating the life you want? Or, like I said earlier, is there something you aren't telling the people on DU about your situation? Refusing work to keep your disabled status? A work history of theft? Jail time? Being disagreeable with anyone who tries to help you out? Why are you REALLY so down on your luck?

60. I am not ashmaed of being poor either
"I am not ashamed of being poor because I worked my butt off and contributed to the pot for many many years."
I don't "work my butt off" and have no intention or obligation to do so. Then starve idiot! :bird:For one thing, I hate workOf course you do you're a liberal! :whatever:(for many of the reasons you outlined) and for another, I'm disabled anyway. Should I be ashamed of myself because I "contribute nothing" and have no intention of doing so? YES! :bird:Most of America says yes.
I say no. And to me (and perhaps a few others), what I do contribute on a volunteer basis has far more worth than mindlessly flipping burgers would, anyway.
This idea that only the economically "hard-working" are "deserving" is one of the biggest things that perpetuates poverty, homelessness, classism, and all sorts of evils. It's really got to go.
Money as Debt: Prepare to be shocked!

Good find, toast...what a leech. The typical mindset of a person who thinks they are owed the world just for existing. Yeah, work sucks sometimes, but like anything that involves hard work(exercise, making a living, etc) there is usually some gratification in it afterwards. What a POS! :bird: I'm not surprised though...a lot of bottom feeding 'assistance tkers' who think they are cutsie for learning how to leech off of society and also that they are somehow owed by the world for being in it. This guy/girl is not an exception, just being ridiculously honest about what a lot of other people like him/her are and believe. And these people can vote to tax the shit out of people who produce--there is something inherently unethical about that.

The thing that really pisses me off is that he goes on in another post in the same thread about how intellectually superior he is and how much he's accomplished for non-profit web sites and organizations! Never stopping once to think and say to himself.."Wow I'm a pretty intelligent guy I should use my intellectual superiority to make a living!" :thatsright: I really wish people like this would just off themselves and save the rest of us the aggravation of having to listen to their tales of woe and want and how stupid we all are for actually working for a living! :censored:

57. Disabled, dirt poor, and a DUer.
Reporting for duty - and despite my limitations, I bring something to the table intellectually. Contrary to popular belief, mental illness does not equate to stupidity or irrelevance. My philosophical work has significant exposure and I volunteer on the board of a 30 year-old non-profit corporation. Despite the fact that I don't matter or even exist to most Americans, I've managed to run major websites and discuss ideas with prominent thinkers.
And while I'm doing all of that, I live in a $4000 single-wide trailer on $637 a month. So yeah, I'm "on the inside." And I'm not hesitant to bring some "insider" perspective to DU when it's needed.
I think I've found my next Du'er to irritate! :censored: :evillaugh:

I hate to tell the little weasel, but non-profit work in a volunteer capacity is generally done by people who can afford to give that time, but I'm sure he's one of those 'purists' who don't want to actually be confined to a non-profit as say a...paid employee? We get to pay for 'it' to have its freedom. Someone needs to send this idjit back to its parents since it seems that is the existence it is content to live. There is nothing intellectually superior about being a leech. That just takes a lowered ethical standard. People aren't idiots like he'd like to paint them for trusting someone to be of adequate character.

Contrary to popular belief, mental illness does not equate to stupidity or irrelevance. My philosophical work has significant exposure
To whom? For all we know it could be that your "work" is used as a case study teaching tool to students learning about the self-appointed, self-deluded "intelligentsia."

and discuss ideas with prominent thinkers.
Who said they're prominent thinkers? Liberalism automatically conveys the message that liberals are not thinkers at all. So these individuals, if they even exist, are more than likely only prominent thinkers among other like-minded fools who believe themselves to also be prominent thinkers.
And while I'm doing all of that, I live in a $4000 single-wide trailer on $637 a month. So yeah, I'm "on the inside." And I'm not hesitant to bring some "insider" perspective to DU when it's needed.

That's probably why Wal-Mart is so hated...they demonstrate the fact that people like bobbolink and Naturyl could have jobs. One of our Wal-Mart door greeters is missing a leg. He doesn't usually wear a his prothesis, either. He doesn't need it when he's sitting on his stool, greeting people.
We have several Wal-Mart employees that are obviously disabled in one way or another...and many are either retired, or in high school or college. (D*** that Wal-Mart for helping them earn money for a car and an education!!) ::)
