'Second Life' ends couples' first marriage (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5j3oEIpAYx6DZyclLaPGef9b4H8Ng)
LONDON (AFP) — A woman is to divorce her husband after discovering he was having a virtual affair within the online game "Second Life," newspapers reported Friday.
Amy Taylor, 28, met her husband David Pollard within the game in May 2003, and six months later, she moved into his home in Cornwall.
The couple married in July 2005, while their "Second Life" avatars Dave Barmy and Laura Skye -- younger, slimmer versions of their real-life selves -- also held an online ceremony for their virtual friends.
After a rare break from the computer, however, Taylor returned to find her 40-year-old husband in an intimate, albeit virtual, position with an online prostitute within "Second Life", which she said was the "ultimate betrayal".
"I was so hurt," she was quoted as saying in The Times, adding that theirs was a "very serious marriage".
"I just couldn't believe what he'd done. It's cheating as far as I'm concerned, but he didn't see it as a problem and couldn't see why I was so upset.
"He said I was just making a big fuss and tried to make out it was my fault for not giving him enough attention."
Second Life is an online role-playing game with more than 15 million users, in which players can create virtual avatars and interact with other gamers, or the environment.
The game has its own virtual economy, in which online currency can be exchanged for real-world US dollars, and several major businesses have set up "branches" within the game, while others operate entirely within it.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Taylor claims that Pollard is now engaged to the woman he was having an online tryst with, despite never having met her.
She has, meanwhile, found a new love, through fantasy online role-playing game "World of Warcraft".

Revealed: The 'other woman' in Second Life divorce... who's now engaged to the web cheat she's never met (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1085412/Revealed-The-woman-Second-Life-divorce--whos-engaged-web-cheat-shes-met.html)
The new fiancee of Second Life love rat David Pollard, whose marriage crumbled when his wife caught him 'having online sex with her', was unmasked today - and denied the pair had had a cyber-affair.
Linda Brinkley, 55, known on the multi-player online game as Modesty McDonnell, revealed that since her online fling with David Pollard the couple had become engaged in real life.
But Miss Brinkley today denied that her internet love affair with Mr Pollard had led to the break-up of the 40-year-old's marriage to ex-wife Amy Taylor.
When their computer-generated selves clapped eyes on each other, she said, it was 'love at first sight'. But she claimed they weer only friends until David split with his wife.

LOLZ! My wife was a beta tester for that game. One of her comments was "it's designed for people who want a different life than they have." I watched her play it a few times. It seemed it really was designed as a "hook up" game. She became bored with it pretty quickly, probably becaues she and I are happily married and she got tired of being hit on all the time.

So it's like the folks at DU? :evillaugh:

I never played Second Life. It has never appealed to me much anyways. Gees, why would someone commit adultery on Second Life. It's like someone admitting to having an affair on My Space. :mental:

A friend of mine told me I just had to try Second Life. It was the greatest thing since sliced bread. So I did and came to the same conclusion that your wife did. Why do I need this "second life" when I have plenty of things to take care of and do in my real life? It's a silly concept to me.

I tried it once. Made my avatar a tall blonde woman with big boobs. Didn't take long for someone to start hitting on me, which was what I expected. Lots of sex stuff right out in the open for people to com... uh... stumble across, too. Anyone who tries to convince you that Second Life is for anything other than sex is either deluding you or themselves.

Am I the only one that's never heard of "Second Life"?

It's some kind of game online where you make a persona and interact with other users. I've never played it so I don't know how it works.

I have and it does not appeal to me. Rather play a real game than this.

I didn't click on the article link until I got home because I didn't want to get into trouble. This comment by a reader cracked me up.
SL is no game... sorry. It is a virtual world created by its inhabitants and its the people that make it what it is not the programme itself.. however there are real dangers of addiction. I met the love of my life in SL in February 2008 during a concentrated phase of interest. The game organiser Linden effectively pushes you into working to survive in the first month as they don’t allow new players to cash any sensible money; for females the easiest way is to get a job as a pole dancer/ stripper. I faced the absurd situation of what eventually transpired to be two real life senior executives on the opposite sides of the Atlantic meeting under these conditions... virtual stripper and virtual client! We fell deeply in love and were married in an SL wedding in May but separated three days later due to real life issues. We couldn’t stand being apart and so took the relationship real in September and plan to meet in a “Sleepless in Seattle†style event scheduled in London for Feb 2009.
