Family of Martin Luther King Jr. Wants Share of Obama 'Change' Merchandise

ATLANTA  —  The family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is demanding a share of the proceeds from the sudden wave of T-shirts, posters and other merchandise depicting the slain civil rights leader alongside Barack Obama.

Isaac Newton Farris Jr., King's nephew and head of the nonprofit King Center in Atlanta, said the estate is entitled to hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fees — maybe even millions.

"Some of this is probably putting food on people's plates. We're not trying to stop anybody from legitimately supporting themselves," he said, "but we cannot allow our brand to be abused."

Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president on the 45th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, and America's first black president will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, the day after the federal holiday created to honor King, who was shot to death in 1968.

While Obama's election may be the fulfillment of King's dream, policing his image and actually collecting any fees could prove to be a legal nightmare.

The King family does not yet understand this "redistribution of wealth".  All words now belong to "The 0ne".

What a @#$%ing insult.

King made his name believing in America and its ideals, not attending racist congregations and cavorting with terrorists that killed Americans.

Obama = the anti-MLK

Barry is more like Kiing's nightmare.  I just can't see MLK being in favor of killing babies or welcoming terrorists.   :banghead:

I read somewhere that the reason we don't hear anything other than the "I have a dream" quote from MLK Jr is that his family put Copyright protection on everything that MLK Jr ever said or wrote and that it costs a small fortune to use any of that material.

But back on subject imagine if the Superbowl was played on MLK Jr's birthday - his family would be raking in the cash.
