Byrd to Step Down as Chair of Senate Spending Panel

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Robert C. Byrd, the longest- serving senator in U.S. history, said he will step down as chairman of the Appropriations Committee in January.

"A new day has dawned in Washington, and that is a good thing,'' Byrd, 90, said in a prepared statement. "For my part, I believe that it is time for a new day at the top of the Senate Appropriations Committee.''

He said Senator Daniel Inouye, 84, of Hawaii will become chairman. Inouye "has stood in line for many years and now his time has come,'' Byrd said.

Byrd's ability to chair the panel has been at issue in recent months. In June he was hospitalized for the third time this year after he suffered an infection.

Byrd entered the Senate on Jan. 3, 1959, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first of 10 presidents he served alongside. He won re-election to eight more terms, rewarding his constituents by bringing billions of dollars in federal projects to the state.

"I am now confident that stepping aside as chairman will not adversely impact my home state of West Virginia.''

trading an 90 year old for an 84 year old ?   Hell, I'll be surprized if Byrd makes it to January.

Standng in line for something until you are 84 years old does not appear to be an example of good judgment.

At some point, a reasonable person would have to throw up his hands and say, "Screw this!".

I hope they have a #3 handy, they'll need it.

I hope WVa got everything built they needed, no more for them.  Barry wants to kill their only industry (apart from building things with Byrd in the name).  It will make a nice federal park I guess.
