I want GLBT DUers to know that you have my respect and my sympathy.
Advertisements [?]While the election of Barack Obama shows how far this country has come toward the goal of equal rights for all, the success of anti-gay ballot initiatives across the country make clear how far we still need to go. No other Americans are forced to have their basic human rights put up for a popular vote every two years. It is a disgrace that should have ended years ago.
No doubt it is particularly frustrating to see so many DUers in a state of euphoria from the presidential election, without appearing to give much attention to the incredibly disappointing defeats faced by GLBT Americans -- and by all Americans who care about equal rights.
I suspect it may be little comfort, but I think it is worth mentioning that having a Democratic president will have an important impact in the cause of civil rights for GLBT Americans, at very least because of the Supreme Court (which is where, inevitably, the issue of equal rights for GLBT Americans will be resolved for good). Six out of nine Supreme Court justices will be in their 70s or 80s during the next 4 years (Stevens 88, Ginsburg 75, Scalia 72, Kennedy 72, Breyer 70, Souter 69). We need new justices who care about equal rights.
The fact that fundamental human rights are still denied to GLBT Americans in the vast majority of this country makes a mockery of this country's self-professed values of freedom and equality. The election on Tuesday was another heartbreaking reminder. I want you to know that you have my respect and my sympathy.
Didn't know marriage was a basic human right! By the way since when have we prevented them from getting married?http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4393905

Of course this has nothing to do with human rights.
They can already be "married" in whatever godless coven or universalist cesspool they wish.
It is all about money, forcing employers to give the next guy who pokes through the glory hole the same benefits as a husband or wife.
It would be a busy season in the group benefits department after gay pride events!

I still can't figure this out.
What "rights" does franksolich have, that gays don't have?

Hello, my friends. It's been a while.
I live in CA and voted for Prop 8. Here are a couple of thoughts for lurking DUmmies:
1. Consider the followng map: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-2008election-california-results,0,1293859.htmlstory (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-2008election-california-results,0,1293859.htmlstory). If you take out the entire Bay Area, Califonia not only said YES to a ban on gay marriage, but HELL YES. It wasn't even sort of close. The same people you relied on to sweep Obama into the White House are the people who look poorly upon homos marrying one another. Chew on THAT.
The people have spoken, period.
2. Suppose there was a national referendum on abortion rights, as many DUmmies have craved. Suppose it passed. Next, suppose the Supreme Court ignored the lawful will of the people and struck down the vote, declaring abortions illegal. How would you DUmmies feel about a court circumventing the wishes of the people in favor of their own beliefs?
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THE CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT DID WITH GAY MARRIAGE. THEY TOOK A LAWFUL VOTE AND TOSSED IT OUT THE WINDOW. We voters just said, um, sorry, Supremes, that's not your job.
So if you're REALLY a liberal, you'd be in favor of Prop 8, because it put the power in the people's hands, where liberals claim it belongs.
Of course, we all know that the real mantra of a liberal is, "I want what I want, and I don't care what I have to do or whom I have to do it to in order to get it."

You got that right. This is going to eventually happen. History tells the story of what happens to nations once the moral fabric starts to unravel. It's been unraveling, and now it's accelerating.
Ever wonder what it's like to live on the declining side of an empire? We're in it.

Yep. We're mired in complacency and entitlement. With the new Fuhrer in place, we can now slide headlong back into bondage.

Marriage is NOT A RIGHT. If gays want to have civil unions, fine with me, but no marriage. I have known gays who ARE OPPOSED to gay marriage.
