Title: Joaquin Phoenix retires from acting
Post by: jtyangel on October 30, 2008, 11:06:56 AM
Hmm..some actors need to retire, this isn't one. Apparently he caught the music bug when he learned guitar for his role as Johnny Cash. I can't help but think he's turning his back on his calling, but who knows, some people make very good and successful transitions to other occupations or roles in their lives. I really like Joaquin Phoenix so I hope it turns out good for him, but I'll miss him in the movies, that's for sure.

Quote
Joaquin Phoenix, who turned 34 years old just yesterday, stunned E! Online reporter Jason Kennedy with the announcement that he would be retiring from acting. The two-time Oscar nominee stated this on the red carpet at a Monday benefit for the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, a charity founded by Paul Newman.
Phoenix said that "Two Lovers," his upcoming romantic drama with Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw, will be his final on-screen role.

He's still an actor?  In what?

He's still an actor?  In what?
I assume you mean since Gladiator? He's been in a number that did well enough that your average movie watcher would probably know them. The list since Gladiator:

Two Lovers (2008) .... Leonard Kraditor
Reservation Road (2007) .... Ethan Learner
... aka Einziger Augenblick, Ein (Germany)
We Own the Night (2007) .... Robert 'Bobby' Green
Walk the Line (2005) .... John R. Cash
... aka Walk the Line (Germany)
Ladder 49 (2004) .... Jack Morrison
Hotel Rwanda (2004) .... Jack Daglish
The Village (2004) .... Lucius Hunt
... aka Grey (Philippines: English title: review title)
... aka M. Night Shyamalan's The Village (USA: promotional title)
Brother Bear (2003) (voice) .... Kenai
... aka Tierra de osos (USA: Spanish title)
It's All About Love (2003) .... John
Signs (2002) .... Merrill Hess
... aka M. Night Shyamalan's Signs (USA: promotional title)
Buffalo Soldiers (2001) .... Ray Elwood
... aka Army Go Home! (Germany)
... aka Buffalo Soldiers - Army Go Home! (Germany: DVD title)
Quills (2000) .... The Abbe du Coulmier
... aka Quills - Macht der Besessenheit (Germany)
Gladiator (2000) .... Commodus

Seeing as he still works and has had a pretty big hit playing Johnny Cash in Walk the Line in 2006, and that he is very young for a male actor, 34, this is a bit of a shocker. I think it's a bad move since it makes him look foolish if this 2nd career fails and he wishes to return to acting which as a male actor even if he doesn't return for 10 years in his 40's, he would still be able have a long career. Bit of foolish permanence on his part. I wish him well either way. I thought he was a good actor who took roles that really were well suited to his talents. I think that of Robert Downey Jr though too and could kick his ass for losing so many years of his career due to a drug addiction--dumb ass! :hammer: :-)

The only two movies on that list that I've actually seen - or had any interest in seeing for that matter - was Gladiator and Ladder 49.

Oh, and my son has seen Brother Bear.

if this 2nd career fails
There is no if about it...he will fail at music. Some actors get it into their head that because they are talented actors it will translate to music....Can anyone here name an actor that has also been successful as a musician? I'll wait! :-)

I thought he did quite a bit of the singing in the Johnny Cash bio-pic.  He might have a career as a Johnny impersonator, but other than that....... ::)

Kevin Bacon has done pretty well. He's not on the top of the charts, but his band has had a modest following and HE'S HAVING FUN.

With Phoenix, his success at acting has enabled him to pursue other hobbies. Whether or not it actually works well enough for him to make money at it isn't the point -- it's the FREEDOM to do what he likes, versus what he may not like.

Case in point: Marlon Brando stated several times that he hated acting. Yet he was good at it well enough to earn at least one Oscar.

Maybe all he ever wanted to do was eat pasta. He did that pretty well, too.

He should ask Val Kilmer{who  in the movie The Doors did a dead on impersonation of Jim Morrison, looked and sounded spookily like him!} how well his music career is going, while he's at it also ask Keanu Reeves,Kevin Bacon and Bruce Willis how many albums they've sold! :-) He's a great actor he should stick to it!

Celebrity bands have a following because....Are ya ready for it?...THEY'RE CELEBRITIES! Trust me if Kevin Bacon had never acted he'd be playing in a ****ing bar somewhere in Boston! :-)

What about the Lieutenant Dan Band?

What about the Lieutenant Dan Band?

Yep, that's a good one. Gary Sinise is one helluva military supporter and deserves all the recognition he can get for his unbridled, unequivocal, unabashed support. This runs pretty much contrary to the rest of Hollyweird.

Johnny Depp has been very successful in his music career (although he sort of keeps it quiet).

He hasn't retired from acting has he? How many albums has he sold? How many arenas or even amphitheaters has he headlined? To tell you the truth Free I've heard him and every other actor I've mentioned play music.....all of them need to stick to the gift they were given! :-)

He started as a rock guitarist -- acting was just dabbling for him.

Yes? And I wonder why he chose acting over music?.......He's a good actor......if he was a good musician he'd be doing that and making 10-20 million a year....but he's not!

yeah, I know why. It's that metrosexual look initially, followed up by that harelip.

Oh wait! I forgot! You're too old to know anything about that metrosexual stuff, right? Or do you prance around with a scarf around your neck in July?

 :-)

Whoever said that Ricky Nelson was a celebrity?  :hammer: :hammer:

You said in your post that if Mr. Bacon Bits hadn't been a punk kid movie star all grown up now with rock n' roll guitars and all, he'd probably be playing a bar in ****ing Boston.

All I did was point out that he's playing that ****ing bar in Boston, even though he IS a punk kid movie star all grown up now with rock 'n roll guitars and all.

Well, it does take 5 letters and numbers scattered out over a bunch of geezers sitting in a hall surrounded by cards and a marker.

And it usually equates to money.

That's correct enough for me!

Right! he's not a succssful musician! It seems to be a hobby which is fine! My original point was actors who try to make a career out of music retiring from what they do well to pursue it...they never have the same amount of success. Kevin Bacon has not retired from acting to pursue music as far as I know! :cheersmate:

No, he's not retired but he doesn't do as much acting as he used to.

Of course, he doesn't look like the punk kid anymore. Sorta. So maybe the "Animal House"-type scripts ain't rollin' in the way they used to.

The guy needs to comb his hair. Startin' to look like some spiked-hair dweeb.
