SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea's military warned Tuesday it would attack South Korea and turn it into "debris," in Pyongyang's latest response to what it says are confrontational activities by Seoul against the communist country.
The threat comes a day after military officers from the two Koreas held brief talks at the heavily fortified border, their second official contact since the North broke off inter-Korean relations in February.
The North threatened to cut off all ties if the "confrontational racket" continues, citing a South Korean general's recent threats to launch a pre-emptive strike against its nuclear sites and the refusal of civic activists in the South to heed Pyongyang's demands to cease distribution of propaganda leaflets critical of its leadership.
"The puppet authorities had better remember that the advanced pre-emptive strike of our own style will reduce everything opposed to the nation and reunification to debris, not just setting them on fire," the North's military said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Il appears to have recovered enough from a stroke to run the country without difficulty, South Korea's spy chief said Tuesday, but Japan's prime minister said he likely is issuing orders from a hospital bed.
Prime Minister Taro Aso told lawmakers in Tokyo that his government had information that Kim likely remains hospitalized.
"His condition is not so good. However, I don't think he is totally incapable of making decisions," Aso said.
The head of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, Kim Sung-ho, told lawmakers in Seoul that the North Korean leader is "not physically perfect" but appears to remain in command.

This what I have dreaded for many years. This what South Korea dreads the most. If North Korea invaded South Korea, it will be Hell for them. It will make Iraq and Afghanistan look like a walk in the park. Seoul is not too far from DMZ and it is one of the largest cities in the world, 12 million people Seoul proper.

I'm also glad I got out of there way back when. You never knew when something might start. They had a cross border incident there two months before I was to DEROS. The North lost that one.

No. This was in October 1987. The NK's started shooting across the border at a South Korean base with machine guns. The ROKS returned fire and killed 8-9 Nk's when it was all said and done.
