TEQUESTA — A 78-year-old man was arrested Friday after he attacked a fellow golfer on the Riverbend Golf Club course, according to a Martin County Sheriff’s Office report.

John Paul Flanagan of the 9200 block of Southeast Riverfront Terrace was charged with battery of a person over 65 after he struck and choked a man near the 18th hole, according to the report.

Witnesses said Flanagan first hit a golf ball directly at the victim and then approached him holding a golf club in his right hand. Flanagan then hit the other man in the right eye, according to the report.

He then went into his condo just off the practice green and, after a few minutes, went back over to the victim and began choking him, according to the report. ...

Maybe the victim tried to steal the old man's balls.   :-)

After living in a couple of Golf Course Communities, I understand this mentality completely. One community I lived in, was a mixture of townhomes and single family homes. The whiniest & most assholish people in the association were the townhome owners. They even voted themselves to be a 55 and older community. (Much against the original covenants of the entire HOA). I don't know why, but when a bunch of elderly people get together, they're as bad as a bunch of hoodlums. (Hoodlums with a lot of life experience). Needless to mention, they would often drive their golf carts in the yards of the single family homeowners.

One question I have would be, "what fact of law affects a man of 78 beating up another man over 65" ?? I could more understand it were it a 21 year old kid that beat up an elderly person. I think that the DA is grasping here. Assault and battery is STILL assault and battery......
