In the Applachian Mountains of Eastern US, there lives a group people called Melungeon. They were first encountered in the 17th century by European explorers. Melungeon are likely a mix of European, Black, Turkish, Arab, Jewish, and Indian. Their DNA is similar is to that of Middle Eastern people, North Africa, Italy, Spanish, Portuguese, and certain South America tribes. They are described as having dark skin. Melungeons to this day live in American South. Some speak an Elizabethan English and/or are illiterate.
