I don't see the point of this.  As DUmmies they should be used to failure.  Should BHO win, they better get used to swimming in it.

I'm don't understand how a surge in network traffic can require significantly increased power demands . . . . especially to the point of tripping a breaker.

when we lost power, our host provider usually just denied the whole thing. :-)

"Democratic Underground failed you."

A masterpiece of understatement.

The DUmbfuks lap it up like good little puppies, yet even a computer idiot like me can pretty well guess that he shut it down to prevent all the hatred and bile spewed from being seen by the public.

Skins knows his spawn and has no respect for them, just their money.

$kimmers explanation just plain reeks. A shortage of power?! Worse than reeking it is just plain stupid. A heavier than normal load on a computer isnt like oh say a heavy load on an air conditioner. The power usage of servers, and I know this from years of running servers, is pretty constant.

Any 'server farm' that suffers down time due to lack of sufficent electricity is being run by either liars or idiots. At least given $kimmers explanation. What is he trying to do run DU on a christmas light extension cord? A much more likely explanation is he is cheaping out on server hardware and increased traffic just overloaded it. It could be something as simple as he hit a bandwidth wall from his provider.

One time my blog got a mention on a major news site and my traffic went 30 times normal rates for about 36 hours. My bandwidth provider shut me down for several days due to 'over utilization of resources'. I would suspect that $kimmer is just lying to cover his ass and the DUmmies are lapping it up like the good lil retards they are.

I think "The Democrats have failed you" would be more appropriate.

As a small-time webhost, I can tell you this answer is crap. Even little operations such as mine are housed in datacenters with more than enough power. Hell I have sites that have been DoSed, Slashdotted and Dugg - Its driven my operations to a crawl, yet I have never EVER lost power.

I smell a 'repair/upgrade our servers' donation drive- if by chance this is true, there is something very wrong with that hardware if its blowing fuses via overheating.

What a total load of BS.  Traffic might have overwhelmed the servers' or network's capabilities to process it, but if the damned things were turned on and the drives spun up, the actual power pulled by heavy traffic is a pretty insignificant additional increment on top of "Running at all."  I think miskie nailed it - "Fund drive -- right ahead!!!"

What a load of Bull S**T  :bs: :bs: :bs: :bs:

A servers power consumption does not increase by ANY significant amount due to high traffic.
He may have been shut down due to not buying enough bandwidth or the servers crashed from a software bug or insufficient resources, but there no way in hell the AC breaker tripped due to increased load.

Even if a breaker tripped for another reason, what IDIOT would put all their servers on one circuit?

Hell, I have an old rackmount Compaq Proliant DL580 in my closet I use for backup and testing purposes - the dual power supplies and dozen or so internal fans makes it sound like a jet on a runway before takeoff. It is an energy pig. Even so ,I have never blown a circuit with that under full-load.

I thought the exact same thing.

giving him (too much, I am sure) the maximum amount of credit, we have a number of storage arrays that consume varying amounts of power depending on demand, but they are extremely high end devices, and the amount of power they consume just doesn't vary that much.  certainly not enough to trip breakers, &etc.

I'm callin' bullsh*t. :-)

But wait...didnt they just have a drive for new hardware? Heres a pic of $kimmers new state of the art server he got with the DUmmies donation money...well, what he had left after the ski vacation in Italy.

Funny, that looks like the engineering space on a fast attack sub.  Leave out the tv and keyboard in the foreground, though.

I wonder if having Laura Inghram mention the DUmp on her show yesterday had anything to do with it?

Nawww, a Rand Corporation model of a home computer in 2004 from back in 1954.

they aren't all buying it, by the way.  of course, his solution is to raise taxes (donations) and solve the "problem" before he even knows what it is. :-)

82. How does high traffic affect power consumption?

I don't get it. Makes no sense.

If you've got an underpowered power supply in a server, and you've got it spinning a bunch of drives (though large drive arrays typically have their own dedicated power supply), you might overload the server's power supply. But there's no ****ing way that power supply is going to start drawing additional power off of the grid. And even if power did go out, your hosting company doesn't have its servers on UPS's? What kind of rinky-dink outfit is this? They don't seem to know shit. Have a fundraising drive and move to a reputable hosting company.

The paper going into the middle top of the keyboard and coming out the left bottom kind of made it pretty obvious.
