Title: Zunes.... help? ACC?
Post by: Schadenfreude on October 13, 2008, 10:05:28 PM
I am going to flipping scream.

How can someone mess up a Zune? I don't know if my impatience bit me in the ass once again or what.... here is what happened.

I posted this on the zune support forum here is my cut/paste:

I am in a bit of a hurry to leave town and I wanted to get my daughter's zune set up. I briefly read through some of the other posts and I think either my problem is unique or I am just a putz.

I installed the zune software onto a pc running xp/sp3 and plugged the zune into the USB port. (I actually think I had the zune plugged in and charging while I was installing). Anyway, the battery charging light is on, but in a charging state (2+ hours ago). When I go to the Settings/Device/Check For Updates....... It says no zune is connected. I cannot turn the zune off or reset.

Does the zune have to be fully charged in order to be updated, for that matter reset or turned off? Did I do something out of sequence? Help.... :(

Does a Zune show up in My Computer or in the Device Manager?  My camera shows up as a removable drive.  First thing I would do is unplug it and plug it back in.

If all else fails, pull the batteries out.  :p

That was how I handled my ex-wife.

I can't do anything with it.... it is in a complete non-responsive state. I tried the power down, reset, reboot, nothing. I swapped my zune in and it works fine. The fugger is DOA.

Did you unplug it and take the batteries out?

Dude... I don't think I can. I probably would invalidate the warranty.

No, it should be OK. They aren't hermetically sealed.

EEP!!   :o    All I know, from what I've read on the Zune forums recently, is that there have been a ton of problems with the Zune software not working with or recognizing the device, if used with XP Service Pack 3.

I recently updated to SP3, and I did have some problems at first.  At first, it wasn't recognizing my Zune in the software.  About a month ago, I let the Zune alone for awhile, and the battery completely died.  I almost sent my Zune in, due to the SP3 problems, but instead let it charge through my laptop (my docking station bit the big one, so I used my syncing cable to charge my  Zune)  Even when charged, it wasn't being recognized.  I can't remember what I did to get it to work, though.

No, the battery cannot be removed.  It's sealed in.  Wish they could be removable, though.  :(

Schade, which version of the Zune is involved?   I have the 80 GB version.

There must be a "reset" button somewhere.

This might be a silly question, but:

Schade, is the switch on top of the Zune set to "unlock?"

I'm looking at my Zune's settings right now, to TRY to jog my memory as to what I did to get it working.

It is the 8gb. I have the 30gb and have had no problems whatsoever. This bastige is going back to Target.

Yes, there is an off button, a reset and a reboot..... none of the combinations of key presses work. This thing won't even go from a charging state to a fully charged state, it is like it is in suspended animation.

Yeah, it's unlocked. I swear, I have done it all. This thing is deader than a door nail.

Now the fun will be to return it... They better not give me a hard time.  :censored:

That's the best route to go, I think, compared to sending it off to MS for "repairs." (Don't get me started on a friend's adventures with their 30 GB needing repairs :thatsright:).

Hope everything works out, and y'all get one that actually WORKS!

To conclude...... I left it overnight and completely drained the battery. This morning I plugged it in and voila! it works!

Next time, RTFM!! Most of them say to NOT connect the peripheral device UNTIL AFTER the software is installed. Glad you got it fixed.

It's a Windows product.  It was bound to happen.

There is apparently a "hardware reset" feature with the Zune involving holding the "back" button and center button down. I've never played with a zune , but Apple has a similar procedure where one performs a hardware reset on the device that resolves most freezing problems.

NB , it sounds like a issue with the software in the player freezing , as draining the battery also clears the required parts of the "memory" and forces a restart.
