Homeless shelters turning away people

More than 350 people a day were turned away from homeless shelters during a 12 month period, a report shows.

Family groups were the most likely to be denied a place to sleep, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report.

The paper looks at the state and federal Supported Accommodation Assistance (SAAP) program for homeless people and victims of domestic violence.

It found that although 14,000 people with housing needs were accommodated each night between 2006 and last year, 368 were not.

This number represented less than half of the 644 requests for immediate accommodation made each day during the time the data was collected.

More than half of the people turned away were under the age of 20.

And some groups, like couples with children, had more difficulty accessing accommodation than singles, the report found.

This is so reminiscent of the sudden epidemic of homeless winos and hobos that was reported on daily during the campaign between Bush 41 and Clinton. The network nightly news would have features every evening about a family with children, or an elderly couple out on the streets due to the severe recession caused by Bush 41 policies.

In one of the most astounding political triumphs ever, President Clinton solved this problem within hours of his inauguration, and we never heard of it again, until now. (That is, if you ignore the DUmp posts of the ever-sunny and optimistic DUmmy bobbolink.)

In this case, the DUmmy failed to note that it's a news story from Australia. But never mind that, it's still Bush's fault.

What's the bet that most of those turned away were either violent offenders, druggies or a repeat offender who'd been flagged as a trouble maker and placed last on the list.
