Chicago to Approve Public High School for Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Teens
Chicago school officials plan to recommend opening a gay-friendly campus, citing studies that homosexual high school students have greater dropout rates than heterosexual teens.
The School for Social Justice Pride Campus, if approved, would be the city's first school for gay, lesbian and transgender students, The Chicago Tribune reported.
The final vote by the Board of Education is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Chicago Public Schools head Arne Duncan plans to ask the board to give the green light to that and 17 other schools, according to the Tribune.
"We want to create great new options for communities that have been traditionally underserved," he told the newspaper. "If you look at national studies, you see gay and lesbian students with high dropout rates ... I think there is a niche there we need to fill."
So here we go with more "special rights & protections for 'special' people'". What happened to all those groups that fought against the idea of "separate but equal"? :whatever:

I've heard liberals make that exact argument against that type of school. I think it's meant to address the high dropout rates. Kids considered to be at risk have been pulled from the classroom to learn in another environment (which others screaming that inclusion is always the answer). I'm not completely sure this a bad thing. And if the gays were in another school, nobody could argue they're forcing their ways on the rest of the school.
on edit: I notice nobody here has addressed the dropout issue. Any alternative ideas on how to keep the gays from dropping out of school? I sort of think a start might be to address the bullying issue better than we do now. It's not just gays who are bullied. It's anybody RUMORED to be gay.

I generally don't put much in HS days, but I have always enjoyed firing the "BMOC" types when the opportunity presented itself. As a small business owner and also as a senior manager.

I see nobody in this thread actually got "picked on". The type of "picked on" that homosexuals and those even accused of homosexuals actually was about following people around, harressing them, spitting on them, threatening to beat them up, hitting them, etc. If it happened to adults, the law would call it haressment, physical assault, etc. If the adults aren't required to get a thicker skin, why should the kids?
But maybe a seperate school isn't the answer. I've been thinking they seriously should bring back the paddle. Next time a kid is caught haressing another kid for whatever reason (homosexuality, weight, class, etc), they should be sent to the principal's office to get whipped. Then maybe they'd grow up into people who think haressment and physical assault is a big deal (no matter who it happens to).

I think you're right.
But seriously, the schools need to start disciplining more on bullying. Involve more counselors. I'm sorry, but they don't do nearly what they should because they don't think it's a big deal for kids to pick on each other. Unless you live every day sick to your stomache because you fear for your safety if you go to school, you really don't have an understanding of the situation.

The job of the damn Guidance Counselor is to guide people in school to what they should do. They aren't damn thearpist...........they aren't mediators. They guide a person on a path to follow after High School.

I wasn't just teased. I had people occasionally threatening to kick my ass. Either I was staring too much, supposedly spoke behind one's back, etc. Finally, in high school, somebody told me they thought I was stuck up because I was quiet. So I ended up opening up to some of the popular people and living happily ever after. Meanwhile, there were at least two people in which I tried hitting them or hitting them back. It didn't solve the problem. One of them told me the problem (staring at her), so I made an effort not to stare at her. Two I spoke it out with in the guidance office and guess what? IT WORKED. I didn't end up in a fight. I still got taunted and teased by one of them, but at least I wasn't worrying about getting hurt anymore.
That's what some of you dumbasses don't appear to get. Better yet, some of you all seem to appear to think some kids deserve it for being different or in most cases RUMORED to be different. That's disgusting.

I won't say that children should get the same penalty as adults. I'm a long opponent of trying kids as adults for any crime. However, I get a little bit tired of people passing off haressment, spitting on people, biting, hitting, and so forth as simply teasing kids or kids being kids. It's the fact that bullying isn't taken seriously as to why people are getting pissed off about it to want to segregate or do worse things to begin with.

Why would I have to complain about somebody threatening me when they did it out for everybody to see? Like most kids, I didn't want to tattle. I didn't even like the idea of using a guidance counselor until I was assured it wouldn't go to the principal's office.
As for the rest, I really hope you're not in the school system. I think you'd be very bad for it. Honestly.

Yes, bullying is a very serious issue. I doubt gays are the only people dropping out of school over it. Truth is no kid should be scared to go to school and the problem sure shouldn't persist for years like it does for some kids. As for the second line, it's all been called bullying over the years. Different schools handle things in different ways, but it often doesn't get handled until a two sided fight breaks out. Then of course both kids are in trouble. I do think it's still bullying before it gets to the second line though. Name calling is one thing, but when kids start following other kids, getting in their faces, and threatening them, it's literally haressment. There actually is a difference between saying things to another kid to hurt their feelings and pushing them to the point that they don't want to come to school.

Male students have been virtually emasculated within our liberal society & school systems. Hell, a guy could have been a fag, but one way or another, he would get his ass kicked or kick someone's ass. Oh yeah, and school shootings were unheard of back then and most of us had ready access to guns.

There's always been a non-violence policy in schools. It's just now they want to treat kids like they're adults and call the damn police. Consequently, you can't hit the bully in school now without a major consequence. Not to mention the schools think suspension is the answer to everything. Got in a fight? Suspension. Late for class again? Suspension. It's ridiculous. They took paddling out of schools because some teachers used to hit the smallest kid with something the size of a chopping board. They can't figure out a middle ground. But what difference does it make? The parents won't support the teachers when they discipline (any type of discipline). Many of them are so convinced that their kid does no wrong and/or that teachers are too stupid to know what they're talking about that discipline is pointless (so obviously, the parents would not discipline their kids when told their kids were behaving badly in school most of the time).

Same here. I was very skinny in school and got picked on all the time. I got in a lot of fights with kids bigger than me; won more than I lost. I learned that if you stand up, the bullies will quit picking on you especially when you kick one of their asses. If you back down everytime someone picks on you, you will have it done to you ten fold. You will go thru life as an adult with the same pathetic character flaw.

My 8th grade son has some faggot pestering him for sex. He's str8 and this has him....well.....very upset. I told him to tell the teacher or someone higher up that if it didn't stop he was going to knock hell out of him and we'll deal with that when it happens.
Life was so much simpler when it wasn't run by and for 2% or less of the population.
