Title: OK: I'll Concede Obama's Point: Healthcare is a Right
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on October 08, 2008, 12:27:49 PM
Healthcare is a right as it is essential to meaningful survival. Ditto food shelter and clothing (which will be the next liberal tropes) but where liberals get their conception of rights wrong is the mistaken belief that the indiviual rights of individuals is the obligation of society in general and government in particular.

The function of government is to protect rights from infringements of force and fraud. Government's rightful role is to set standards defining fraud and enforcing those standards. It's inconcievable that citizens would be denied healthcare by threats of force unless they sought benefits outside of government or union-thug approved systems; but that's more a harbinger of liberal tyrannies than an endorsement of their policies.

If the liberal blather about government being responsible for providing the means of our rights were taken seriously they would be forced to admit that government is repsonsible for providing us free access to Fox news, subsidizing our churches and establishing gun purchase programs to keep the citizenry well-armed.

I go with Responsibility not Right. Rights are in the BOR. We don't need to socialize that document.

I watched a poster at a lib website make a point that has something in common with your post.

How many of you remember Philip "The Chickenman" Testa, the anarcho-socialist nut who was at CU for a while?  Well he ended up at another lib website, and on one thread made a comment that all food, shelter, and clothing should be provided by the gov't (via taxation, of course) which would free people up to employee themselves in fields of which they would enjoy rather than having to work in a particular field because they had no choice.  One of the posters, who was an accountant or worked as a paralegal, then noted they would love that, that they had always wanted to write romance novels, and that meant they could go months and years doing research and writing while not having to worry about where they would live, what they would wear, and if they were going to eat.

The libs went ballistic.

"Are you a novel writer already?  If not, then you can't just decide to become one."
"Why not?  It's what I really want to do, and I wouldn't have to worry anymore about the necessities."
"It wouldn't be for that purpose.  You're just wanting to take advantage of the situation."

Well, no kidding.  Are they actually so stupid they don't realize how people would use and abuse the system, even one that was less than all encompassing as the one described on the lib website?  Yes, they really are that dumb.

Healthcare isn't a right. To assume as much means you think you have the right to someone else's property and labor.

Sure it is.

So is really, really good food -- steak, pheasant under glass, fine wine, top shelf liquor and beer,

And housing -- at the beach or lakeside.

And vehicles -- Ferarrii Testerosa at a minimum.

And College Education -- Harvard, Yale, Pepperdine, USC (take your pick which one).  No community colleges in MY rights.

And women -- I prefer Liv Tyler (with laryngitis) or Jessica Alba (I will have to put a little weight back on her), but I have right to access to and congress with any woman I wish.

These are RIGHTS, dammit!

Just call me UUP.

it's amazing how much the word "right" has mutated since the founding.  it was originally a protection against government interference.  it has become a claim against government for specific performance.

that's one of the things that the notion of a "living constitution" gets you;  meaninglessness.

"Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"

I guess I don't see most of the DUmp rights there...but I do see how they hate to grant these rights to other humans.

....establishing gun purchase programs to keep the citizenry well-armed.

A GOOD Second Amendment interpretation could mean EXACTLY that!!

The libs' definition of a right is an entitlement.  They don't see the distinction.

...and they don't exercise that "right to remain silent" often enough.   :-)

I want the right to be able to buy my own health insurance at a fair market price without the cost being bloated by government regulations and requirements.  And I'd like the same tax break my employer gets for footing their half of my insurance policy.
