Oh my.

The inevitable question: which primitive is this?

MANCHESTER — It’s a sure sign that Election Day is near when political signs start disappearing from people’s yards. But this time, the alleged thief was caught red-handed.

Ontario County sheriff’s deputies said a passing motorist saw someone stealing a McCain for President sign from a yard on North Main Street in the village  Sunday night, so the motorist called 911.

Deputy Joe Murphy stopped a car — around 8:20 p.m. on Route 96 in Victor — that matched the description given by the caller. He reported finding numerous other signs for McCain and Republican congressional candidate John “Randy” Kuhl — along with some Cub Scout signs — inside in the car driven by Roger B. Wood, 35, of 101 Harper St., Apt. 2, Rochester.

Wood was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle when it was determined that his license had been suspended for failing to answer a summons in Rochester City Court, deputies said.

Wood wasn’t charged with stealing the signs, but the investigation is continuing.

“As of now, we don’t know where they’ve been stolen [from],” Lt. Bill Gallagher said, adding that the sign owners would have to be found and then they’d have to press charges before Wood would be charged with petty larceny.

It’s not known what political party Wood belongs to, why he targeted signs for Kuhl and the GOP presidential candidate, or why he also allegedly took Cub Scout signs, Gallagher said.

The sheriff’s department receives several reports of missing political signs during a typical election season, Gallagher said.

Wood, who was released from the Ontario County Jail on $750 bail, couldn’t be reached for comment this morning. He’s to appear in Victor Town Court Oct. 14.

"It's not known....."--yeah, right.

We can probably make some assumptions about his sexual orientation as well.
