I'm FURIOUS at my Rethug dad and stepmom right now!!!
Ok, I know I shouldn't let stuff like this get to me, but I'm absolutely fuming at the moment.

So my family is split along political lines: My dad and stepmom (both 52) are hardcore Republicans. Myself (21), my sister (19), and my mom (52) are all Democrats. This is the first election year that politics has been a real issue in our family. My mom's pretty apathetic usually (though she just registered to vote for the first time in 30 years to vote for Obama). My sister has always been liberal. I myself am a convert, as my dad and stepmom had brainwashed me into Republican BS until the past year and a half or so. They're none too happy that my sis and I are now fervent Obama supporters, but even so, we've kept it civil so far. My dad's a legitimately great guy, but my stepmom brings out the worst in him. And she can be a good person herself, but FSM help you if you say her opinion is wrong.

So my mom, dad, and stepmom drove up to Gettysburg College (where my sis goes) yesterday to see her perform in a play. She'd had a REALLY bad week. Her boyfriend of over a year broke up with her on Wednesday. And before that, she opened the week by breaking her toe. I didn't go, because my girlfriend and I went to Hershey Park for the day. Which is probably for the best, as I would have enflamed the situation more. So after the play, they went out to dinner, and after a while the conversation turned to the debate. My sis commented that it scares her that Palin thinks global warming isn't manmade. The problem is that my dad and stepmom share this belief. They went on a rant about Global Warming being BS and Biden being a liar. My sis, in admittedly not her most tactful moment, said that this was "stupid."

My stepmom then snapped. She went on a rant, saying something about how my sis and I "won't even know what it means to be Democrats for at least 20 years" and that we have no business having any political views until we're not financially dependent on them anymore. Yeah, I don't get it either. But it made my sister really upset, not to mention making my mom furious.

So that was bad enough, but I thought it was over. We cheered up my sis and tried to put it behind us. But then my mom just got a call from my sis, in tears. Apparently my dad, with my step-mom's prodding I'm sure, had called my sister, yelled at her, said she behaved like an "insolent little child," and demanded that she apologize to my step-mom. Again, her saying that what my step-mom had said was stupid wasn't very tactful, but it certainly wasn't worth that kind of reaction. They both went totally over the line, and the worst part is I'm sure that this kind of shit will keep happening as we get closer to Election Day.

As a postscript though, I was IMing my sis as I wrote this post. I helped cheer her up, and we had this convo:

Me: And remember, if she pisses you off, just think about how much fun it'll be to watch her head explode on election day!
Her: haha indeed! I'm so glad you're not a Republican anymore.
Me: Haha, I sobered up, and smartened up, and joined what's looking more and more to be the winning side.
Her: I hope! But I suppose that's the point

6. Amazing how these stories are gracing DU today,
each and every post is about how my mom, dad, aunt, uncle, brother and sister
including in-laws all hate Obama and are not voting for him.

Listen, I wish people can spare us the negative details about family and friends
not voting, this is becoming so much of a STAGED play and its getting old.

If you asked me,thats how I can tell who is a paid shill and who isn't.

Its just down right sad that people can stoop to this level just to smear
Obama.

Looks like this is the new form of smear, since they can't use and out and out
racism, I call it overt racism, its disguise as a concerned but deep down its not.

How pathetic!

10. you and your sister are not alone! I just went through this last night

with my sister (she is an independent) who is married to a hard-core repub--my brother-in-law  He sounds just like your step-mom. He worships the ground Palin "winks" on and he's just flowing with rwing BS talking points.

My sister goes back and forth--one minute she hates McCain and is voting for Obama; the next minute, she's unsure since my BIL fills her head with this crap. It's frustrating and all I can say is: hang in there and limit visits!  It's hard to have a discussion with the Palin-blowhards, because they ain't seen this much "folksy" since Mayberry RFD.

Tell your sis, good job and hang tough! She's not alone

11. I just had a blowout with my little brother ....
Edited on Sun Oct-05-08 08:59 PM by Trajan
We always had a 'no politics' rule when we get together, because it invariably leads to bad feelings .... So lately: He has been sending his RW rants ala email, to which I usually ignore without a single response ....

Today: He sent me the 'Obama is SO stupid he answers the telephone upside down' email, with the note "hehehehehe" .... So I told him "look ... It is apparent you are sending this false crap just to antagonize me ... It is BS, and I have told you before to NOT send this kind of crap to me" ....

He responded that it was a joke ... yeah right .... I essentially told him to NOT send me any more messages ... period ....

He has always been a right wing asshole, but he was tolerable as long as we didn't discuss politics ... As far as I am concerned: Family is more important than politics, and if you cannot express the correct priorities in family communications, then it would be far better if we simply did NOT talk again ..... He exploded in conservative angst, a typical nutter rant ... but I am done ....

Sad ... but done .... I love my brother and his family: But I am not his punching bag .....

Enough .... I would rather be alone than be insulted ....

I'm curious, being deaf.

Does a bouncing ball make some sort of noise?

A real one from Whamo! makes a kind of a pleasant "Kertunk!" sound.

The ones from DU generally go "Splat!" :)

The moonbats telling these tales should be concerned. It seems they are all the black sheep of their families.

If all but one of a family of four is a knuckle-dragging rethugglikkkan, then Obama loses. Plain and simple.

There are so many balls bouncing around in this thread, it looks like a lottery drawing.

I especially liked this one:

One can be nearly certain that DUmmy goddess40 sees no irony in her stupid post.

Sounds like someone is not going to get any more financial assistance for community college.

Politics before family. Oh my.

And they wonder why there are tons of threads on DU bemoaning the lack of normal family relationships.

I wonder how long it'll take these DUmmies to realize it's not bright to piss off the holder of the purse strings...

Oh they know it - that's what makes these bouncies so much fun. This scenario is probably what the DUmmy imagines and wishes was true, but reality was never like this. They would never bitch to the rethug's faces unless they were backed up by the rest of their local drum circle.

You nailed it, sir.

Right on the head you nailed it, and with just one bang.
