Scientists: Climate-Change 'Time Bomb' About to Go Off
There's a ticking time bomb underneath the oceans, and it's about to go off, some scientists say.
A Russian research ship trawling the Arctic off Siberia's northeastern coast has found huge amounts of methane bubbling up from the seafloor, according to reports in London's Independent newspaper and the Canadian Press wire service.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, trapping 20 times as much heat as carbon dioxide. While there's little of it in the atmosphere, there are gigantic frozen deposits of it, called methane clathrates, trapped in rocks in seabeds all over the world.
One of the leading global-warming doomsday scenarios involves all that methane thawing out as sea temperatures rise, then rushing to the surface and into the air, creating a runaway warming scenario.
THE END IS NIGH (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,430623,00.html) :whatever:

OH MY GOD, IT'S:

and I do feel fine!

OH NO!!!!!!! ....better stick a match to it.

OH NO!!!!!!! ....better stick a match to it.
Russians smoke like frickin' chimneys, if there was anything to this, that trawler would have been blown to Hell. Or just sunk like a stone, since a ship isn't bouyant enough to float on water with gas bubbling up through it.

Actually the ship would have sunk like a stone (if there were any significant gas release)......however there is a germ of truth to this, as there are actually vast amounts of solid methane in the oceans.....which may well be the source of our collective independence from oil, eventually.....

Yeah, I'm aware of the deposits, metane HCl or something in frozen form kept under by the pressure, the various science whores like Michio Kaku have been flogging this catastrophe on various science programs for a couple of years. I noted the bouyancy issue as well.
I have a hard time buying that a tiny fractional degree of water temperature warming, which is the net effect of all supposed global warming at the depths involved (and if sea levels rise, the pressure keeping it frozen actually increases), is going to do much. It seems a lot more likely to be a natural gas vent, if anything.

Actually a significant temperature change would (theoretically, at least) have no effect on the methane deposits, as the bulk of the physics involved in maintaining their stable state as a solid is the pressure at the depth they are located......and you are again correct about the AGW theorists....who unanimously project a key effect as an increase in mean sea levels, which would fly in the face of threatening release of any significant amount of methane.
Climate change, being a religion instead of real science, would, of course, require some portion thereof to be based on "faith"....

Scientists: Climate-Change 'Time Bomb' About to Go Off

Methane Hydrate, there's enough energy there to keep us going for several centuries if we pump it, pipe it south and make synthetic oil and fuel from it.

There is a rather large deposit off the coast of the Carolinas that they have talked about developing.

You been watching "Ice Road Truckers" lately?
-
I had beans with my lunch. I think I could be a pretty good methane source, at least until tomorrow.
-
And I wait with baited breath to see what happens on October the first with the oil companies and all the bans lifted.
No need to cue Lucy and the football..................yet I wait to see

about all it would do is make the air stink to high heaven.
but by all means lets pump the shit up and run my SUV on it for pennies a gallon !
-
YES, i SAW THE methane hydrate well that the truckers were servicing. Notice how they really didn't say much about it. Methane was first "cracked" into diesel, gasoline and oil on Germany during WW2, and we're MUCH better at it now.
The amount of methane in the coal, the permafrost, in the oceans, in the oil deposits and in deposits of their own is just amazing and we need to stop flairing it off and putting it to use.
Methane is a clear ODORLESS gas, what you smell is the mercaptian added commercially so that it can be smelled so you don't suffocate or blow yourself to hell by accident. MANY people have died walking into mines contaminated with methane smalling nothing before they lost consiousness.

I did not know that, thanks !

No sweat. I learned about it many years ago when two GI's at Ft. Carson walked into an abandoned gold mine and dropped dead. We were warned and had the matter explained, as we were always going into the mountains and exploring. The "Brass" decided 2 dead were enough.

Nancy and Al will want to place frozen methane off limits as it is a fossil fuel..... frozen dinosaur farts.
