Bring it, bitches!
Oh, and...
YOUR 2008 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS...

I'll be more excited about the playoffs if the White Sox don't screw it up today, but if they don't, I'll be rooting for the American League team in the WS for sure.
-
Vegas has the Angels and Cubs set as the favorites to reach the World Series with Boston as a close third. Milwaukee is done with Sheets shutting it down, but, the LA/Cubs series will be a dogfight. The Twins are hot as can be right now so I think they'll make it and I look for the Angels to get it done with Beckett crying about his obliques now.
-
Ah, Soxtober is upon us, the fresh smell of autumn in the air.
100 wins means nothing now my friend. It's showtime.
Beckett or no Beckett, the game is on and my boys know how to bring it.
Let the games begin gentlemen.

I understand... Vegas sneezed and totally missed it every time the Phils beat the Cubs this year. I forgive them.

They could go. But, a 4-3 record against the Cubs and a straight split with the Dodgers isn't a strong indication of the potential success they'll face against either teams.
ETA: Modified head to head record

Regular season games are not the same animal as the playoffs.
Who chokes in the playoffs? Cubs, Phils, Angels......
Does that mean anything this year? no (well, save for k-rod who aside from 2002 really has not done well in the playoffs -- add to the fact that his media claims he is "tired" and that leaves him a big question mark).
Baseball, y'all know we live for this game (sorry Manny -- but real baseball fans care). :afro:

Not to nitpick, but we're 4-3 against the Cubs, with wins against Zambrano and Lily. And we would have beaten out LA too if it weren't for rotation weaknesses we've since corrected.
All I'm sayin' is we match up nice against anyone. I'm not gonna say much more than that, baseball gods being the dicks they are, but we match up nice. That's all. :cheersmate:

Is everything set? As much as I travel, I just can't keep up.
I know the Angels finished with 100 wins and the Dodgers squeaked the West.
Other than that, I got nothing.

You'd better hope so, because, the Red Sox got smoked by the Angels and split with the Rays and Twins.

And we'll just continue where we left off. K-Rod is tired? Boo-freakin hoo. So's half your staff. So's Pedroia, Drew, Papi, Lowell, and Youk. You had to pray the Yanks choked in September to make it in. You didn't control your own destiny. You still don't.
See ya tomorrow night. Hope your boys have their vacation plans set up for next week.
-
Are you kidding me right now?
HAHAHAHAHAHA. I am sorry, who the hell is in your division again? You played 54+ games against teams who finished under .500 --- ooh, ya'll are so b-a-a-a-a-d.

Ya better damned well believe it. Even your own sportswriters are running scared:
LINK (http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2008/09/sox_opponent_looks_quite_famil.html)
<excerpt>
As most every Red Sox follower is certain to point out in the next 24-36 hours, there are more than just five months difference between April and October; the games now are entirely different. The Angels had home field advantage against the Red Sox in 2004 only to be unceremoniously swept from the first round of the playoffs in three lopsided games. Last year, the series opened in Boston and the Angels similarly were blown off the field.
In such cases, history is a convenient crutch, though we all know the truth: Those games mean nothing now. The Los Angeles lineups encountered by the Sox in 2004 and 2007 were quite different from the one the Sox will encounter now, and not solely because of Teixeira's arrival. Torii Hunter has since joined these Angels, arriving as a free agent in the offseason. Garret Anderson is healthy this year (unlike last) and someone like Jose Guillen has not been suspended (as he was in 2004), which means that Red Sox pitchers are going to have a far more difficult time pitching to the Angels in 2008 than they did in either '04 or '07.
Please, don't rely on history as a factor in this series. Of all people, Boston fans should know better. If the Red Sox win Game 1 and doubts start creeping into the heads of Angels players, it has a great deal more to do with mental toughness (or lack thereof) than it does with anything that took place on the field last year or in '04.
Relative to '04 and '07, Red Sox pitchers are going to have their hands full in this series because the Angels can score in more ways now. Since joining the Angels, Teixeira has batted .358 with 13 home runs, 43 RBIs, 39 runs scored and 32 walks (against just 23 strikeouts) in 54 games; he has slugged .632 and has an OPS of 1.081. During that same period of time, Garret Anderson has been all but reborn, batting .335. (He went 8 for 10 in his first two games with Teixeira in the lineup.) Meanwhile, Vladimir Guerrero went from batting .284 and slugging .478 (before Teixeira) to hitting .345 and slugging .614 (after Teixeira).
=================================================================================
It's a very different team than the one you faced even last year, toots. Fly that 2008 Wild Card banner with pride. It's the only one you're going to get.
-
Until you win one against them in the playoffs, then the Angels have the monkey on their back. It is the Angels who have to deal with that tomorrow night, not the Red Sox.
I can't stomach Massarotti when he was on the big show and I sure as hell am not reading anything he writes. Ron Borges junior.
Boston has injuries and we lost a slugger this year. They are the underdogs across the board. You better pray the Angels sweep them, cause anything less than that and I will never...
ever
ever
....let you live it down. E-V-E-R.
I have no worries cause I know how this team performs in the clutch. You really can't say the same can you?

Twins lose. :( Damn it. I wanted to give ALS hell for the White Sox sliding their way out of the playoffs.

And what a win, baby! :-)
I just hope the Sox can keep up the steam as they head to Tampa. The Sox are 2-5 against them this year, but it's October, so who knows.
-

Actually, I do. And I've no doubt you'll soon find out.
Like I said, don't go buying those WS tickets yet unless you have a hotel in Anaheim set up.

Your line-up pads their stats this season against chump teams and it's --- watch out, things are different people.

How's that monkey on your back feeling?
* y'all knew they weren't going to lose on my birthday right?

Jesus H. Tapdancin Christ. One friggin win and you'd think you've got the World Series all wrapped up.
Lighten up, Francis. You and bully ought to get together--seems you two share the same brain. Then again, it's the Red Sox Nation, so maybe all of you share a single brain.
A single, teenie, weenie, decayed brain.

I take it your an Angel's fan, huh Spark? Lemme ask ya something then.. what is up with Guerrero's burnt up batting helmet? I know O. Cabrera on my Sox has the same thing, but he was playing for LA last year too. Is it a superstitious thing or what?
Oh well... tonight the Sox go against the Ray's, so I'm gonna be hoping that they win, although I'm not expecting it.

It's a big, pine tar patch. It is more of a repetition thing. A "Touch your lid for some more grip every swing" thing.
-
Pretty much--he starts off with a fresh batting helmet every spring and just adds a bit as the season goes on. Next thing you know, it looks like someone took a blowtorch to it.

All that from "That's one" -- tsk, tsk Sparky, the nastiness is just a tad bit over the top this morning isn't it? [/snicker]
You know that your team was outcoached by Tito of all people, that alone is enough for you to want to put a bullet in your head. No pinch runner for Guerrero? Shields pitching to Ortiz? Seriously?
The Red Sox did what they needed to do in L.A. (by the way I love the fair weather fans in the land of la-la running for the door when moron Guerrero tried to take third and blew the game for y'all). The monkey is jumping hard on your boys' back right now. The pressure is max.
No worries on my end. You keep trying to sell the "one friggin win" song. It really makes this all the more enjoyable.

Oh and I will just sit here and patiently wait for those things to get "different."

And I'll be here as well. I don't run and hide when things don't go well.
What do I look like, A DEMOCRAT???

Brett Myers surrendered two runs on two hits in seven innings Thursday night in Game 2 of the National League Division Series.
But, years from now, when folks discuss Myers' first career playoff start, they'll remember his at-bats.
With two outs, a runner on third base and the score tied 1-1 in the second inning, Myers fouled off three typically nasty CC Sabathia fastballs and worked a nine-pitch walk, sending the largest crowd in the five-year history of Citizens Bank Park into a frenzy. After Jimmy Rollins walked on four pitches, Shane Victorino drove a two-strike cutter into the left field seats for a 5-1 lead.

No commentary from ESPN at all on K-rocked's continued struggles in the postseason. You would never know he blew the game last night. They concentrated instead on Paps "blown save."
Mr. regular season save king sucks in the playoffs, but you would never know if from watching ESPN. But...but...what about that "east coast bias"....... uh-huh.
Two down. Hopefully Beckett is back to form. If not they have to face Lester at home.
Jason Bay's postseason stats are better than Manny's. You know it's all good right? :cheersmate:

They're about to rip my ****ing heart out--AGAIN.
-
They're about to rip my ******* heart out--AGAIN.
I honest to God thought they were going to pull off the win last night. If you had a different closer you would have.
Believe me when I say that I know the feeling of getting your heart ripped to shreds. I can't believe that no one called me on it when I pointed fingers at other teams who have records of choking in the playoffs. You all know that the Red Sox are at the top of that list right?
We take this series we win the WS. It is that simple.
-
I was pretty sure that whoever won this series takes the WS. I still feel that way.
-
They're about to rip my ****ing heart out--AGAIN.
They're part Aztec . . .

Looks like the Cubbies are looking at another century without a WS win. At least they kept the game close last night, unlike the prior two games.

I oughta put a Dodgers' cap on him, print it out, and take it to work tomorrow. :lmao:

Angels squeak one out in a very poorly played game for both teams. I had no idea where the strike zone was as it was forever changing.
Becket's speed isn't back yet, but he worked through some rust. The second Tito put Lopez in I knew the game was over.
Lester is up next. At home.

It did. I'm still pissed about that, even though we won.
-
You know what I can't understand -- pretty much everyone in Boston knew that Angels were taking the lead and the series was heading back to L.A. It was pretty much a certainty.
Then the Angels try a suicide squeeze. In Boston. Are you kidding me right now?
Tito was out-coached the second he took Lester out of the game (why in the hell he did that I have no idea). He continued to demonstate his inability to manage a bullpen, and bam -- the Angels give him a gift tied with ribbons.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Hey Sparky, at least you didn't get swept....
Next stop -- Florida.
:cheersmate:
-
Jed Lowrie does gay pron.
-
Like I said, Red Sux Nation--fly that 2008 Wild Card banner with pride.
-
:rotf:
"Red Sux Nation" embarrassed the hell out of your first place pathetic loser Angels though didn't they? But...but...it's different this year. Yeah, you weren't swept. :lmao:
Like I said, when 60 of your games is played against the chump ass teams in your division then you shouldn't be pounding your chest too loudly on the #1 claim. Mmmkay?
Tito really blew game two, and it just went to hell after that. Oh well.
-
Listen up toots, you had a chance to control your destiny had you won the division. YOU could have been the team to roll over the White Sox and then face what was left of the Angels/Rays series.
So again, fly that Wild Card banner with pride. Your pitching is suspect, your hitting is getting old, and your management, well, you know all about that already.
And BTW--who gets to play the likes of the Yankees, Orioles, and Blue Jays just as many times? Who should have been fattening up on a weak division this year?
Fix your own house, darlin. We've got moves to make this off season. You'll likely stand pat with that fat payroll and fat players all getting old. We'll deal K-Rod out for more depth in the middle infield or a legit #4 or #5 starter since Garland and Rivera will likely be dealt as well. We'll lock up Lackey, Teixeira, and Vlad for the long haul, and keep developing superior farm talent. We can keep our payroll at $120M or less--can you say the same? Not freakin likely.
-
Yawn.
What was your whine last season? That's right -- everyone was hurt. Ring any bells?
We have youth and a farm system stacked with talent, so we will be just fine. Save for the O's, our division is a far cry better than your pathetic one -- how many finished over .500 again? riiiight, same thing. Not.
Your boys choked and choked good. I don't care who you get for k-rod, you got one hell of a monkey on your back that has claimed squatter's rights. But you won your division and that should count for something right? here's a cookie -- now run along.
-
Go ahead and tell me that in a year when Tito and Theo have run the Sox into the ground and you're stuck with a shitload of old, overpaid, underproductive talent--kinda like Papi was this year.
And Varitek. Seriously, $10.5M and the ****er can't even stay above the Mendoza Line half the time?
And Timilin? Really? Dude needs a walker to get out to the mound.
At least you got all those quality innings out of Schilling this year. Good $8M investment there.
Hmmmm...and then there's J.D. 109 games, $14 million. Nice return on that investment.
And let's see about next year...
Lugo? Really? I can play just as shitty as he does for a lot less than $9M!
Ortiz? Let's hope he doesn't miss two months of NEXT year, but given the fact he hasn't had his knee cut yet, it ain't looking good.
You're another year older, not another year better. You've got no prospects ready to go. You've peaked, you're over, you're done. Your grandkids are going to sit on your lap in a couple of decades and ask, "Gramma, would you tell us the story about the time when the Red Sox DIDN'T suck?"
Back to having your hearts ripped out year after year. It's where you fit best.
-
The scary part about this rant of yours is that you actually live in NE and as such have pretty clear access to Boston sports information via local tv and news media outlets.
Are you serious? Nah. You really can't be.
Pedrioa, Ellsbury, Lowrie, Masterson, Lester -- Theo the wonderboy has been stacking the farm system with prime talent. These youngsters more than ready to go. Pick any sports media source and check out their farm system ranking. Then tell the class what you see.
Tek is a good catcher. Timlin will retire (and should have retired this year). Lugo played when last? he will be gone this offseason. Ortiz is hurt. I have no issues at all with Schilling collecting a paycheck this year.
What else you got skippy?
-
No dearest, I have access to your PROPAGANDA. Step back and realize the world does not revolve around Fenway Park.
Damn it's so much fun tweaking your nose out of joint with this shit.
-
My nose isn't out of joint -- we beat the Angels remember? we have a stacked farm system which ranks in the top 5 (#2 in a few outlets).
It's all good.

this thread has sucked from the beginning. baseball is about hope, and being a microcosm of life. you should take it in as it arrives.
the chest thumping is crap.

I hope modern baseball isn't a microcosm of life. That would be too depressing to contemplate.
And chest thumping? Man, you should see the "chest thumping" I see around here. Would make you want to puke.

ETA: By "here" I mean New England, not the site. Just to clarify.
in my baseball thread, I avoided any gloating, which would, in turn, make for any payback.
I like you a lot, NH, but baseball is a religion to me. I'm just not sure how to respond to you on most nights.

Baseball or the Dodgers? Please be able to separate the two.
Personally, I'd rather see a bunch of kids playing the game for the sheer enjoyment rather than the -roided out freakshows that now seem to inhabit the game. Pissing and moaning because they're not getting $25 million a year to PLAY A GAME while most of us poor schlubs eek out a living.
And frankly, the last team that should be running smack in the LA area is the Dodgers. Aside from win a postseason series this year, what have the Dodgers achieved in the last 20 aside from alienating the real fans and rolling over for the thugs who need some gear to wear between Lakers and Raiders seasons?
ETA: And FWIW, running smack is not necessarily the same as gloating. Please be aware there IS a difference between the two.

your lack of a second round in the playoffs doesn't effect me. :loser:

what? no won-loss record in interleage play? no opposing stats?
you have me on the ropes, but you are NOT a real baseball fan, so you don't even realize it.

WE, really sorry about the Dodgers. I was really hoping they'd win, but glad they wiped up the floor with the Cubbies. I was talking with one of my customers who's a fanatical Cards fan. He was very happy about what LA did to the Cubbies.

Oh poor you. I know being surrounded by real fans can be taxing for a land-of-la-la transplant, but I think you are strong enough to weather through it.

this thread has sucked from the beginning. baseball is about hope, and being a microcosm of life. you should take it in as it arrives.
the chest thumping is crap.
I grew up a tortured Red Sox fan. Up until 2004, my Octobers were filled with devestation, crushing disappointment and tears. New England sports teams have had one hell of a ride this past decade, and the tortured souls -- who through thick and through thin stood by their teams -- deserve every minute of it.
You have absolutely no idea what a Red Sox/Yankee rivarly is like. The "East coast bias" that West coast whiners like to complain about exists because of that rivarly.
We drink, eat and breath baseball in these 6 small states of the Northeast (please refer to the la-la-land mesiah Manny's comments on how hard it is to live in Boston, the poor dear), and we appreciate every damn minute of it as we know only too well how it can all go to hell in a handbasket in a blink of an eye.
So the short version is that hells yeah we are going to pound some chests cause you have no idea the journey we had to endure to get to the point where we can do that.
Carry on.

I'll let ya have that one because basically, at the end of the day, it's the ring that matters.

REAL fans? Which ones would those be--the ones who beat up other guys with baseball bats or the ones who run people down in parking lots?
Thanks, I'll pass.

Few extreme incidents of crackheads..... which I am sure don't exist in LA, cause its all small town USA there right?
:rotf:
The only fans who have walked in our shoes are Cubs fans. Those poor bastards carry the cross alone now.

Did you get pictures of the tread marks Manny left peeling out of the parking lot after the last game?

Would you believe it if we told you that Tampa Bay Rays phenom Evan Longoria didn’t exactly endear himself to the locals while out on the town in Boston last week???
During a champagne-soaked time at District after Game 4, the Rays’ hot corner man was suffering from a sorry case of premature celebration.
Seems that after the Rays humiliated the Sox for the second night in a row, Evan was yelling to anyone who would listen: “It’s over now, Boston!â€
Of course, at the time, it soooo wasn’t.
And upon exiting the rockin’ club with a star-struck blonde, a spywitness swears that Longoria poured himself into the back seat of a Boston Police cruiser and said to the cop: “To my hotel!â€
Boston’s Finest, as you can imagine, told Evan and his companion - in the most colorful language possible - to remove themselves immediately from his cruiser. So they did.

Superstar Yankees hurler Joba Chamberlain was busted for driving drunk in his home state of Nebraska early yesterday, authorities said.
Nebraska State Patrol officers stopped the flame-throwing Bomber on US 77, south of Lincoln just after 1 a.m., said patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins.
IN SPORTS: Reborn Bosox Force Game 7
Officers allegedly noticed the smell of booze wafting from the dark-colored 2006 BMW and spotted an open container on the front passenger's seat.
Chamberlain, who just closed out his second season pitching for the Yanks, was driving alone, cops said.
Investigators slapped cuffs on the former middle reliever, who started 12 games for the Yankees this year, and hauled him off to a local detox center to cool his jets.

We can avoid the waiting period and start calling these Red Sox what they are, regardless of how Game 7 shakes out tonight. We can laud them for the kind of stubborn, resilient edge the great Yankees teams of recent vintage owned. In truth, it wasn't until the Yankees finally lost a Game 7 to the Diamondbacks in 2001, effectively ending their dynasty, that we could fully appreciate what they'd accomplished.
No need to wait for tonight, no need to see the Sox lose gallantly or win gloriously. What we've seen, already, is more than enough. So much about this team is so very different than it was in 2004, and the only true links left are Ortiz and Varitek, and the way they've moved across this ALCS it sometimes looks like they actually go all the way back to 1918 with the Red Sox.
Yet there was Papi on Thursday, reaching back to 2004 and hitting one over the night. There was Varitek, who hit four homers and drove in 10 runs and hit over .300 in those epic ALCS collisions with the Yankees in 2003 and 2004, channeling that Varitek.
And there were the Red Sox. Still breathing. Still standing. Still refusing to hand over the Commissioner's Trophy. Still the champs, for at least one more night.

The only reason I posted this is because it is written by one of the biggest Red Sox haters on the planet.

Rays win it, they are World Series bound.

Sorry, Formerlurker... at least ya'll made them sweat it out a bit.

Red Sox only produce one run to support Lester? They totally deserve to lose. The Sox were totally beat up, with the starting rotation just barely getting by. If they pulled off the win last night, I really don't think they would have won the WS anyway.
Rays didn't fall apart. Good for them. Should be a good series coming up.
I will however be rooting for the Phils with Red -- Howard will do what Ortiz couldn't, and that my friends will be the game maker.

Oh yeah. The Rays do have some work to do. Philly's got a damn good team with Rollins and Howard hitting 400 foot balls like it was nothing. It will be an interesting series.
