WASHINGTON (AP) — Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks — many calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.
The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about two and one-half percentage points.
... More than a third of all white Democrats and independents — voters Obama can't win the White House without — agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.
Such numbers are a harsh dose of reality in a campaign for the history books. Obama, the first black candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, accepted the Democratic nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, a seminal moment for a nation that enshrined slavery in its Constitution.

That's what I thought, covering all the bases. A third seems quite high as a proportion though, perhaps they are anticipating a blowout.
-
If there were an objective and thorough analysis of this, which will of course never happen, I believe his race would not prove nearly as big a negative factor as the racialism of large blocks of his own supporters.

That may be true - since the subprime lending market woes, all the public polls seem to lean Obama now, which just doesn't fit with news such as this.

who cares what charge they level? without vote fraud or other irregularities, they can scream all they want but all it boils down to is they lost, cuz the courts aren't going to overturn all those votes just cuz one guy says he lost due to racism...

I think Jeramiah Wright did more to steer white people away from an Obama vote than they will ever in their wildest dreams imagine. Question is, did he do it on purpose?
-
There are a fair number of older, white, "yellow dog Democrats" in the southeast who don't exactly have an equitable view of blacks. Remember, it was the Democratic party that tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act. Many of them have (sadly) switched to the Republican party, but there are quite a few who haven't.
In addition, many elitists feel terrible about the 'plight of the African-Americans', but wouldn't actually talk to one unless they were cornered.
But 30%? That sounds awfully high.

And its the conservatives who are racist ? :whatever:
I' beginning to wonder just how large that Bradley Factor will be !

You got that right.
I wonder how long those notorious tapes of Wright's had been generally available ?
If its not that long, could be. That nut has been racist from the git go but how long has he kept it in-house ?

Really? Bobby Byrd and Albert Arnold Algore Sr were Republicans?
:whatever:
I think that if you did an honest comparison between the attitudes of the white citizens of, say, Charleston, SC, and the white citizens of any liberal bastion of enlightenment (think NYC) and you will find that the worst attitudes against minorities are not where you think they are.

When Obama gets beaten in PA & NJ, the liberal media will blame all the racism on white southerners. The truth of the matter is that there are (3 to 5%) of white racist Northeastern Democrats in Boston, MA that would never vote for a black man. So they will either sit out the election or vote for McCain. I think it is going to be a blow out.

You could get them at the church gift shop (or from their website) until the s**t hit the fan earlier this year. I don't remember if they pulled the tapes, edited them, or stopped selling them altogether.

Right, but could you get them two years ago ? Four years ago ?
Did he ratchet up the rhetoric only when he knew where the machine was going with BHO ?
Trying to get to whether od not he was out to nail him.
Of course it serves his interests for BHO to lose in general terms too...

Personal experience. If my phrasing makes it sound like it was the filibusters (filibuster-ers?) who switched parties, then my bad; that's not what I meant. I was referring to the 'yellow dogs' that switched parties.

the campaign is now trying to put the genie back in the bottle. race better left as an implied white guilt matter.
When the Democratic primary descended into a charged debate about black and white and Sen. Barack Obama's racially polarizing pastor last spring, Obama took the stage to address the question of race head-on.
"Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now," Obama told those assembled at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center and a nationally televised audience in March.
His campaign, though, didn’t follow his lead.
Instead, his aides have steered clear of any explicit discussion of racial inequality or of his pioneering campaign as they try to woo swing voters, some of whom may be discomfited by the notion of the first black president.
"The best time for a national conversation on race is when he's president," Bill Perkins, a New York state senator from Harlem and early Obama supporter, said Saturday, expressing a widely held view among Democrats.
But the national conversation appears to have arrived. Racial considerations that have long been palpable in southern Ohio and other crucial regions are again in the foreground. A new poll that accompanied a much buzzed-about Associated Press article on Saturday appears to starkly quantify the cost of racism to Obama: 6 percentage points in the polls.

Those cities in the North are some of the most segregated like Boston, Chicago, and Detroit.

I know, I've been to all three.

McCain will not win MA but wait till the election results come in from those lily white burbs in Boston. Obama is going to shit a brick and of course the media will downplay all those racist there.
