Well I'll be.
Sometimes we get pleasantly surprised. Like today, for example. My home care helper, here one afternoon a week, was finishing her tasks when she said, "I'm telling all my friends they have to vote. They don't like it, but I tell them what you told me."
By way of background, when she arrives I'm usually watching MSNow (or Cspan when congress is in session). She's a recent high school grad, just starting classes at the community college. Back in September she asked what it was like on 9-11, and I had to stop and arrange my comments for someone who wasn't alive at that time. Getting my mail is her last task ever since the building moved all our mailboxes to a spot on the other side of the property, and for the last couple months there's been stacks and stacks of political mailers. Today's mail had several large full color candidate cards, and I asked if she'd like to take some with her.
She laughed and shook her head, then made her remark about what I'd told her. "You said that if I don't vote I can't complain." She's now registered, and has showed her friends how to go online to register. Talk about gratifying! And here I'd been pouting about not being able to get out there and help.
