I’ve been living in my current address for over 5 years. I’d say we’ve been good tenants and have never really had any issues with our landlord.
When we first moved in, we had a verbal agreement that heating would be included in the rent and that the rent would increase by $50 each year. However, after a few years, the landlord decided to install wall-mounted AC units. Ever since then, they’ve stopped turning on the heat. We’ve had to rely on those AC units for heating or use our own portable tower heaters, which has significantly increased our electricity bill. Is it legal for a landlord to stop providing heat when heating was part of the original verbal agreement?
Now, when I paid my rent at the beginning of this month, my landlord informed me that the rent would increase by $600 per month starting next year, which is roughly a 31% increase. I tried negotiating with them, but they refused and simply said that the market rate has gone up.
I’ve been doing some research, and it seems that my apartment may not be rent-stabilized or protected by Good Cause Eviction, although I’m still trying to confirm that.
If the apartment is unregulated and exempt from Good Cause Eviction, am I basically left with only two options: accept the rent increase or move out? Or are there other legal protections I should look into?
Has anyone experienced something similar? I’d really appreciate any advice on what I should do next or what resources I should contact. Thanks!
This happened to me. The only thing we could do was legally they have to give you a 90 day notice your rent is going up since you’ve lived in the apartment for over 2 years. I called the 311 tenant hotline and got some good advice at the time I highly recommend.
this sub is full of landlords. watch out.
What do you expect? Landlords don't work, they just extract money. And with all that free time they defend their lazy bullshit on reddit.

Big mistake, the landlord must have seen you arrive in the back of a turnip truck, anyone with a working brain would get a lease!~ :thatsright:

To be legally binding, agreements regarding real estate must be in writing.

Welcome to the real world, oh pampered one. BTDTGTTS, and didn't whine about it. We just moved to a place we could afford. Of course, NYC's rent control laws have constricted the city's housing supply and thereby jacked up the prices of the housing that is available, so enjoy the consequences of rent control.
