With one of our major parties pushing for socialized medicine (“Medicare for all”), it’s a good time to check in with Britain’s National Health Service to see how socialized medicine works in practice, as opposed to in the imaginations of liberals. Today’s headline: Crumbling NHS maternity units hit by leaks and sewage.
Thousands of women giving birth in NHS hospitals have had their care disrupted by water leaks, sewage spills and collapsing ceilings, a report has revealed.
Maternity and neonatal care units in England recorded nearly 15,000 incidents of interruption or delays to care caused by building or equipment breakdown in only three years.

Buildings in nearly half of England’s 120 trusts with maternity facilities failed to meet basic health and safety standards. About 50 maternity hospitals needed major repairs and eight were at “serious risk of imminent breakdown”.

One photo, from the Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire, taken in June last year, shows a hole in the ceiling which was temporarily “repaired” and had water draining from a hose into a muddy wheelie bin. This partially obstructed the corridor for about six weeks, and within weeks of that leak being repaired, the area flooded again.

The NHS report revealed that between April 2020 and March 2023, there were more than 5,300 reported instances of water or sewage leakages, nearly 3,000 incidents related to poor ventilation or heating, and nearly 2,000 issues with the structure of buildings in maternity and neonatal care services in England.
The report found that patient safety and dignity was so compromised that care had to be paused in more than 1,100 cases.
AFAIK, the source of the reports, The Times of London, is not a click-baity tabloid.
This is the reality of gooberment-run healthcare that Prog dreamers desperately need to deny.
