AZT is still a standard treatment for AIDS, and is on WHO's list of Essential Medicines. Early in learning to treat AIDS, when AZT was all there was, there were serious problems with high-dose regular treatments.
Wasn't he criticized for his (in)action during the HIV/AIDS epidemic?
That was probably part of the false Hate-Reagan slander that the Feds were not funding or doing AIDS research.

The Mayor of SF did try to shut down the bath houses, but future Senator Feinstein caved when the gay activists howled. (IIRC, this all came down soon after Mayor Moscone and ephebophillic-stuporvisor Harvey Milk were murdered and Deputy Mayor DiFei moved up to be Mayor)

You were closer to the situation than I was and I was only a teenager during the breakout of HIV/AIDS, so I'll trust your judgment. Have read and watched a few only moderately biased documentaries and the made-for TV movie "And the Band Played On". It was a weird time, and we've learned a hell of a lot more factual information regarding the disease. I wish it on no one, however leftists still blame the Reagan administration without blaming reckless sexual and drug behavior.
