Title: Stupid Question about Housewarming Gifts
Post by: jendf on September 18, 2008, 02:47:19 PM
Is a bottle of wine a suitable gift for a housewarming party or should I buy a plant or something instead?

Ideas please! Thanks. :)

A bottle of wine is an ok gift. Is there something the household could use better??

Not really. The owners are loaded so they really have everything covered.

Bottle of wine is a good gift.  Much more enjoyable than a plant.  You can't drink a plant.  :)

Assuming you already know they aren't teetotalers (religious or otherwise), it's a great house gift.

Wine is always appreciated.  I think my mom and stepdad ended up with a couple cases befor they were done moving in.

I dunno.

After the parents died, some wealthy Republicans in Lincoln sort of looked after me when I was in college--in fact, I knew them much longer than I knew my own parents--and these were people who had everything.

And so if I gave them something, some nice flowers were always appreciated.

As for wine, if somebody wanted to give me wine as a gift, St.-Louis Beaujolais is always good; to me, it tastes like the blood of one's enemies, and I used to sip on it a lot.

Gift certificate to Lowe's.

A small home fire extinguisher.

Brass door knocker.

Pot of chrysanthemums.....white goes with everything.

If this is your first visit to the new home, take a plant.  It's traditional.  It symbolizes a wish of good luck and prosperity in their new beginnings.

Wine's always good... I usually bring a bottle of red and a (chilled) bottle of white.  If you don't know what to bring, go to a good wine or liquor store and ask.  I've gotten far too many bottles of Sutter Home White Zin from well-meaning but wine-ignorant friends.

The key to bringing wine is that they've now got a minor obligation to have you over and drink it with you... :cheersmate:

Actually the traditional Bread, Wine and Salt is a nice touch too.

Those are good gifts.  I never had a house warming party when I moved into my house.  But heck, if anyone gave me that stuff today I'd still be tickled pink.  :)

That I could use.  It could go next to my scantily clad ladies antique clock.

My wife and I are teetotalers, but I still cook with wine.  I also don't get pissy when somebody goes to the trouble to give me a gift that doesn't fit my "lifestyle", at first glance.

A bottle of wine is a great all around idea.

I go out with them all the time. They are definitely not teetotalers.  :evillaugh:

How 'bout a space heater.  :rimshot:

We got a new pastor at our church a few years ago and had an old fashioned "pounding" for him.  Gave him a new hammer and a box of nails.   :-)
