I am sure this won't age well.

Nope, but Trump will soon have another accomplishment for DU-grade Progs to hate.
BTW, gas prices here in Silicon Valley are still significantly lower than the highest under LIEden,

Ah, terrible puns. One of the few things leftists are consistently good at.

Looking at the price for 91/"premium", it might be, the gas pump at least. The sticker might be a Photoshop, though better than average (note the seam where two sheet metal panels abut).
That said, CA gas prices are $1-$2 per gallon higher than many/most states, and its all about CA taxes and Sacramento's decades-long lawfare and harassment against oil companies and refineries.

New sticker
As Kennedy might say "your driveway doesn't reach the street" But, he'd miss that one too.

None of them cared about gas prices during the biden or obama reign of stupidity, beyond getting pissed if anyone laid blame on them.
-
Since unlike many DU-folk I'm not inclined to lie, when we got gas yesterday the price had risen from $5.00 to $5.40 (I rounded up the .001). This is still lower than the peak under LIEden, though close to it (10 or 20 cents lower than LIEden).

Am I misremembering, or was it the case that, in the past, leftists have suggested higher gas prices were actually good, since it would encourage people to use public transit or electric vehicles?

Your neck of the woods has the added problem of all the refineries that have already packed up their dollies and dishes and left the state, as well as those who are preparing so to do.
In my neck of the woods, gas shot up from $2.80 (for premium 91 octane) or so where we were before spring break, to what I paid yesterday at $3.18 per gallon.

You remember correctly. In the 70s and 80s, Enviros were demanding that taxes be raised to bump gas prices up to $5 per gallon ... for the environment.

...
I've been posting about prices for the same grade and same stations for apples-apples comparison.
CA has some of the or THE highest taxes on gas in the US. The Dems in Sacto have been waging lawfare against refineries and gas companies for literally 2 or 3 decades (e.g. shamvestigations of "price gouging" every year or two that always proved there had been none).

California bill to suspend gas tax fails despite rising prices
State Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Huntington Beach and author of Senate Bill 1035, told journalists Wednesday afternoon outside the same Sacramento committee room that California prices are only going to rise at the pump. He blamed the state's policies for often allowing price hikes.
“Here in California, because we rely so much on foreign oil, we put ourselves in this position,” Strickland said in response to a question from The Center Square. “Because of anti-business policies, we just lost Phillips 66 and Valero’s shutting down. Now my bill is the only thing we really have right now to give immediate relief to hardworking California families.”
In addition to suspending the state’s gas tax for one year, SB 1035 would have suspended California’s low carbon fuel standard and exempt transportation fuel suppliers from the state’s cap-and-trade program for one year, according to a legislative analysis.
...
The bill was rejected Wednesday by the Senate Environmental Quality Committee.

No good bill proposed by an R, even something Dems would otherwise support, will pass the Sacturdmento legislature.

Liberals train of thought:
Under Biden: The high gas prices are not his fault. Presidents do not control the price of gasoline,
Under Trump: The high price is all Trump's fault with his unjust, unconstitutional war.

Have Democrats ever met a tax they didn’t like?

A couple of notes:
1. The $5.40 was the credit price; at the same station the cash price was $5.30.
2. Later in the day a station I drove by was simply $5.30 a gallon.

In both cases, Presidential actions affected the price at the pump. With LIEden, it was regulatory fiat that drove the prices. With Trump, it's the temporary effects of an effort to end the 47 year war with Iran by taking out the Mullahcrats and destroying Iran's ability to hit Israel and blackmail the world.
-
At least for here with 87 octane gas we went from 3.29 back down to 3.15/Gal where it has been for a while since the start of the war.

Only ones their accountants can't fudge numbers enough for them not to pay.
