This Week’s Highly Anticipated Firefly Announcement Finally Got the Update We’ve Been Hoping For
By James Hunt

24 years after Firefly started and quickly ended, Nathan Fillion is getting the crew of the Serenity back together. Over the past couple of weeks, the actor, via the Instagram account of his podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, has been reuniting the main cast of Firefly. The purpose of these has been to tease an announcement that’s coming on Sunday, March 15th, when the actors will be appearing together at AwesomeCon.

Fillion had already visited most of the main cast, going one by one (the videos show him knocking on their door and telling them some variation of “it’s time”). That’s included Gina Torres (Zoë Washburne), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), Sean Maher (Simon Tam), Summer Glau (River Tam), Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye), and Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb). The one missing was Alan Tudyk, who played pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburne (the final member of the main cast, Ron Glass, who played Derrial Book, sadly passed away in 2016). In the latest reel on Instagram, Fillion confirms Tudyk’s involvement.

It’s not a surprise to see him back, given how close he and Fillion are – including co-hosting the Once We Were Spacemen podcast. Still, given his character died in the movie Serenity, there had been a question mark over his involvement, particularly if this really is going to be a reboot or revival, so it’s a relief to have the confirmation.

Shiny.

Been hearing about the Babylon 5 reimagining for years, yet nothing.

That's because the current crop of mouth-breathing Hollyweird writers can't get past the insurmountable hurdle of J. Michael Straczynski's production standards. They've got no chance of "making [Capt. John Sheridan] a chick and gay" while he's zealously guarding the IP.

Firefly Animated Series In The Works With Full Cast On Board

BY NICK CARUSO  UPDATED: MARCH 15, 2026 11:16 AM EST

Time to brush up on your Mandarin, Browncoats. The big "Firefly" news that's been teased for weeks has finally been revealed: An animated "Firefly" series is in the works!

Stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk (along with the rest of the cast) announced the news during a reunion panel at Washington D.C.'s Awesome Con Sunday. In a new video that popped up on Instagram, Fillion announced that not only does he have creator Joss Whedon's blessing, but 20th Century Fox/Disney is also excited to see Serenity soar again. ("They said yes," he says.) As for showrunners, Fillion has two lined up: Tara Butters ("Agent Carter," "Dollhouse") and Marc Guggenheim ("Arrow," "The Flash"), a married couple who met while working on the series. A script is already written and an animation house already lined up: the Oscar- and Emmy-winning ShadowMachine. All they need now: a home.

Fillion and Tudyk — who played Captain Mal Reynolds and Hoban "Wash" Washburne, respectively, in the space Western caper — have been teasing the news for weeks. In a series of videos posted to Instagram, Fillion was seen knocking on the doors of Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), Sean Maher (Simon Tam), Summer Glau (River Tam), and Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye), teasing that something big was on the horizon. ("Oh, it's happening," Fillion told Maher at his doorstep.)

Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb) can be seen in the new video that was posted Sunday (above), though Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, sadly died in 2016.

From what I understand the series will take place between the TV series and the movie Serenity. I like the idea of the show being animated as it gets around the cast being 20 years older and allows characters killed in Serenity to be used as well, though they will have to find another voice actor for Shepherd Book since Ron Glass passed away 2016.
