Bondi Beach terror suspect 'swore allegiance to Islamic State' but was 'not a threat'

Australia’s domestic intelligence service is reported to have previously investigated Bondi Beach gunman Naveed Akram over alleged links to Islamic State, reports The Telegraph.
Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid Akram, 50, were named as the terror suspects behind the attack on Jewish families celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney on Sunday evening local time.
According to reports, Naveed Akram, a recently unemployed bricklayer, was placed on a watchlist in 2019 and was believed to have pledged allegiance to the IS terrorist group, the Australian Broadcast Corporation said. It has also emerged that Sajid Akram, described as a small business owner, incredibly held licences for recreational hunting and owned six guns despite his son's record of being known to authorities, according to police.
Naveed Akram and Sajid Akram killed 15 people at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach. Father and son are terrorists.
Officials cited Iran as a key suspect and said potential links to Hezbollah, Hamas and Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba were being examined, according to Israeli media reports.
Police also recovered a black and white IS flag from a vehicle linked to the suspects while searching for explosives.

Known wolves but not taken seriously.
Antisemitism has two basic forms. The open and overt and the unseen variety that won't protect against the overt. The latter enables the former, and Oz is far from unique for officials who won't act to protect against antisemites.

I did not think my comment above applied directly to the Bondi shooting. I was referring to the PM of Oz who approved recognition of "Palestinian statehood", but:
Shocking New Detail About Bondi Beach Terror Attack Changes Everything

Since the terror attack at the Chanukah by the Sea 2025 event at Bondi Beach in Sydney, public Hanukkah celebrations around the world have been tightening security, including events here in the United States. But an eyewitness account from Sunday’s attack suggests that even a visible security presence can fail when it matters most.
One survivor described a prolonged, methodical assault carried out in full view of police officers who, he says, never intervened. Witness Shmulik Scuri told a reporter that the shooters carried out their attack for what he estimated was 20 minutes, and the police did nothing.
“There was, there was two shooters, one on the bridge, one under the bridge, and just start to shoot for 20 minutes,” he said. The gunmen fired repeatedly, paused to reload, and resumed without interruption. “They shoot, shoot, change, change the magazine, and just shoot.”
What left Scuri shaken was what he says did not happen. Police were present, yet no one returned fire. “Uh, simple as that. Twenty minutes. There was four policemen there. Nobody give fire back,” he said.
The quiet antisemitism happened, police officers declined to interfere with the slaughter. In a rational world they should be charged as (using US terms) accessories to murder. Given how accepted antisemitism seems to be in Oz, I would not expect more than mild discipline, if even that. Evil often protects its minions.

But the "solution" the PM is proposing is tighter gun laws.

How tight can they make gun laws. They are already really restrictive.

It's a smokescreen that is easier than admitting they had ignored a highly probable threat.

Bondi Beach hero helped disarm terrorist before police mistakenly shot him: report

A man who rushed in to help disarm one of the terrorists who fired at a crowd celebrating Hanukkah in Australia’s famous Bondi Beach was mistakenly shot by police and tackled by bystanders, according to a new report.
The heroic civilian, who was only described as a Middle Eastern refugee living with his Australian wife and kids, was in Bondi Beach when Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid, 50, allegedly opened fire at a crowd of Jewish revelers.

Harrowing video shows the moment the good Samaritan runs up the bridge where the gunmen were firing from after one of them was hit by police returning fire, the Daily Mail reported.
The man quickly sneaks up on the downed shooter and begins kicking his rifle out of reach before the gunman can grab it.
The quick-thinking civilian then begins to raise his hands and back away from the scene, but gunfire continues to ring out as he shouts, “Don’t shoot.”
Absent contrary evidence, I'm inclined to attribute this to some mix of incompetence (the police either were less than eager to help Joooos or were so unprepared that they froze for a time) and the confusion of what was in progress.

It's odd how they allowed the shooting to go on for twenty minutes, but "unfroze" when finally a good Samaritan showed up.
