YES! I want 'Free' health care!

YES! I want 'Free' health care!
Just like we have 'free' roads, 'free' k-12 education, 'free' police and fire protection.

New DUmmie trying to score points. All this free crap is not free you idiot. I would rather have the roads, fire dept. and police dept. privatized.

Did DUmp-Cred seeking LPC Noob frogstar0 just highlight the fact that government-run health "care" is paid for by taxpayer $$$$ and administered by a bureaucracy as efficient as the DMV/MVD? :rotf:

You can have free healthcare.

You just have to pay for it yourself.

You can have free healthcare.

You just have to pay for it yourself.

What he wants is for his/her healthcare to be paid mostly by other people's taxes.

Democrats seem to be disposed to accidental admissions lately, more so than normal. More than one Democrat has let it slip that this shutdown is just political theater and trying to use leverage. Not that we needed them to admit that.

Based on my recent property tax bill, my county very much incorrectly thinks that they’re running Ivy League schools.

When I was in school in the 70s, we had 5 elementary schools. All of them but one were run down and falling apart. None of them had air conditioning. We had one middle school. It was in a little bit better shape, and one wing even had air conditioning. We had one Jr High that was fairly new. We had one high school that was, with the exception of the library, old as the hills, but it did have air conditioning. The teachers were paid next to nothing, and many had to have second jobs. Despite all of that, our schools consistently ranked in the top quarter of the state.

Now days, all of our schools are new, and it seems like every time that you turn around that they are building a new one. Teachers are flocking to the school because of the good pay and benefits. Despite all of that, our schools now consistently rank in the bottom half of the state.

I used to wonder about the difference in ranking between my time in school and today. It finally dawned on me that the age of the school house doesn’t matter. What matters is the fact that in my schools days the school was controlled locally AND the teachers weren’t there for the paycheck, for the benefits, or to indoctrinate children. The teachers were there because they actually wanted to teach children, and that’s what they did. As an adult, there are two things that I consistently try to do. One is the thank anyone that I meet who has been in the service. The other is to thank any of my old teachers that I meet because I realize that even the ones that I didn’t like way back then weren’t really a-holes. They just took the job of educating children seriously. If not for them, instead of a fictional spirit-guide with no smell whatsoever, I could be a brainless idiot posting on DU.

I spent 23 years in the military to "Get Free Health Care". And as a large majority of my fellow vets have found out. it's not all it is cracked up to be. People have died for the simple fact they were not even seen at their appointments or treated for whatever it was that was wrong. I have been lucky that my local VA has been more that I could hope for when it comes to helping me out. I served with a guy in the 101st and he lives in AZ and he won't go near his local VA because it is so worthless as to cause him to pay out of pocket for any needed medical treatment.

An example of the effects of the Canada-style government-run healthcare would be this chart of the number of MRI machines per 1M population, https://www.statista.com/statistics/282401/density-of-magnetic-resonance-imaging-units-by-country/ . The US is 4th in the world, with the 2nd and 3rd place countries being very slightly more. Canuckia is 27th in this bar graph, with a bit more than 1/4 of the US. BTW, the only EuroLand country with more than the US, very slightly more; Germany, Italy and Finland are fairly close. The stats for the UK are not on the bar graph.

The data here is older, https://www.commonwealthfund.org/international-health-policy-center/system-stats/mri-machines , but England (not the entire UK) in 2019 had fewer machine per 1M than Canada.

In this data for CT Scanners, https://www.statista.com/statistics/266539/distribution-of-equipment-for-computer-tomography/ , the US is "only" 7th. In EuroLand, Greece and Iceland have more. Canuckia has ~1/3 as many as the US, and again, no UK data.

In PET scanners, https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/availability-of-positron-emission-tomography-pet-imaging , the US leads the world, Canuckia has less than 1/3 as many, and no data for the UK.

One of the ways government-run healthcare schemes save $$$ is by limiting expensive diagnostic equipment. Canada clearly has done this, and it looks like England - and probably the UK - has as well. Having less access to diagnostic tools translates to delayed diagnoses, greater disease progression, and even "unnecessary" deaths. Finding similar data about specialists, surgery, and treatment availability is beyond my GoogleFoo, but there's a reason "medical tourism" is a thing, including Canuckians coming to the US for diagnoses and treatments.

As the saying goes. If you think healthcare is expensive now, wait until it's free.
