Title: Loss of Canadian tourism in the Florida Keys is a shock to the system.

Loss of Canadian tourism in the Florida Keys is a shock to the system.

I live in the Tavernier Islamorada area of the Keys and for the first time since Trump showed his ass to our wonderful Canadian neighbors last year, we are now seeing and feeling the loss of their annual migration. Yes, traffic is much less congested as is the seating in restaurants. But I can just imagine how much it is negatively affecting the local restaurants, hotels, fishing captains, shop owners, home and apartment sales and rentals.

However… guess how they voted in the last election? Hard to feel sorry for them.

Any Cave people living in that area who could comment on this claim? Also, does tourist season in the Florida Keys extend into October, which, IIRC, is well into hurricane season?

When I used to live in south Florida Canadians were considered cheapskates and poor tippers. Personally as a Floridian I get tired of being up to my ass in tourists. They clog the roads fill up the beaches with no regard to the dunes or wild life and to many of them are messy.

If they stay out of the keys it's more room for the natives to enjoy the place. :thatsright: :-)

Around 2016, I was doing a job near the coast in Georgia. Now, I love Georgia, but in my opinion, Florida's coast tends to be prettier. With that said, the next door neighbor saw me in the yard and came out to talk. He had a heavy New York accent. He turned out to be the friendliest guy you could ever hope to meet. When he introduced himself, he followed the introduction with, "You can tell by my accent that I'm not from around here. I'm one of those Yankees". We talked and joked around some. I finally asked him why he decided to move south. He said he had to get away from the northern winters. I asked why he didn't move to Florida since it had the prettier coast. This is what he said, "Oh, we checked Florida out first, but to be honest, there's just too many damn Yankees down there."

I have a lot of friends down in the Keys and they will be stoked about this.... if it were true... but it isn't.

And of course, the fact that the US Dollar has gotten stronger in the past year has nothing to do with Canadian tourism to the US. Also "of course", I doubt that any DU-member thought to check the exchange rate, eh. I just checked ... not one did.

The first time I walked around in Key West all I could think was what kind of freaky wacky wonderland have I stumbled into and is everyone on drugs.

Back when I lived in S Florida, I mostly worked restaurants. We used to say: Do you know the difference between a Canadian and a canoe?

Canoes tip.

To be fair, that's a cultural thing. I parked cars as a valet at a Seattle hotel while in college and we had our share of Canadian guests. Some would tip, some not because they just weren't used to tipping so it didn't occur to them.

I can't speak for Florida but this year at Wonderfest, a SciFi/fantasy/horror model contest held each year in Louisville KY. The Canucks stayed away because of Trumps Tariffs. I saw it as a slap in the face to the people who run the show. They didn't have a thing to do with what is going on with the tariffs so why harm them buy now showing up? Not that i have any love for Canadians since 1988 anyway when they kept me and a few of my buddies out of their clubs because we were all US military. I get it they had problems in the past but that happens with anyone you let into a bar. Also, that particular group of Canadiens wouldn't shut up about my country on Facebook, so I dropped them anyway.
