Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac to close NY offices over AG Letitia James' 'corrupt and dangerous business practices': report

The offices of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are set to shutter their New York offices over Attorney General Letitia James' "corrupt and dangerous business practices."

A source in the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees government-sponsored enterprises such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, told Fox News, "We are shutting down the two New York offices for Fannie and Freddie as a result of Letitia James' corrupt and dangerous business practices in the state."

"We'll still employ New York residents, and we'll still continue to do mortgage loans in New York, of course. But we are going to eliminate our physical presence. And to the extent that we have leases, we are going to be subleasing those," the source added.

Looks like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are doing this, IMO, to preempt harassment and retaliation for "daring" to pursue James's mortgage fraud. She can't raid what isn't there to be raided.

Simplistic thinking and rejecting democracy: Scientists find “strikingly” strong link (https://www.psypost.org/simplistic-thinking-and-rejecting-democracy-scientists-find-strikingly-strong-link/)

Quote
People who want to uphold the current political system and people who want to tear it down may have more in common than it seems. A new study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences provides evidence that antidemocratic attitudes are not tied to one single ideology. Instead, a broad range of psychological tendencies, beliefs, and thinking styles — from authoritarianism and social dominance to distrust in elites and chaotic thinking — were linked to support for ideas that go against liberal democratic principles. These effects were especially strong when individuals viewed the political system as illegitimate.

snip

The researchers surveyed 824 adults in the United Kingdom. Participants answered questions covering a wide range of beliefs, attitudes, and psychological tendencies. These included their views on democracy, openness to new information, trust in political institutions, support for violence, and how they viewed people from different political and social groups.

I highlight two of the problems there....

The full study (https://nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nyas.70062) at a glance reads like malise with an academic thesaurus and desperately seeking to prove a starting assumption, i.e. "stupid people who i don't like are rejecting democracy, which is whatever I want everyone to do".

Charlotte Fraternal Order of Police Request National Guard Assistance

The Fraternal Order of Police in Charlotte-Mecklenburg is requesting that the National Guard be deployed in the city to help them get crime under control.

Well, that is a twist I didn't see coming.

I didn't see it coming, though, at least partly because murders in the City of Charlotte have become so common that 15 murders have been committed since the horrific attack on Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte light rail on August 22nd. 42 days ago, and none have gotten the kind of attention that hers did.

Things are worse there than I imagined.

Ironically, violent crime is down since last year, and no doubt local officials, who have so far not echoed the FOP's request, will point to that statistic as proof that the National Guard is not needed. What they won't add to that statistic is that the department is grossly understaffed and the murder rate is rising again. 15 in 42 days is quite the clip--that's about half the number of murders in New York City in the month of September, and New York City is about 9x as large.

My emphasis. Did the City of Charlotte implement the Defund Police and/or Cashless Bail moronicities?

FBI says its nationwide violent crime crackdown netted over 8,000 arrests in three months

The FBI on Thursday announced that its efforts to crack down on violent crime nationwide had yielded more than 8,600 arrests over the span of three months, and the seizure of over 2,200 guns.

The bureau conducted "Operation Summer Heat" from June 24 through September 20, which featured teams from all 55 FBI field offices and other law enforcement partners. The initiative cracked down on violent crime in major U.S. cities.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the operation netted 8,629 arrests,  and the seizure of 2,281 guns and 44,559 kilograms of cocaine. It also took 421 kilograms of fentanyl off the streets.

It should not be be necessary to point this out, but a DU onlurker might see this post. 8600+ criminals being taken off the streets all but certainly will lead to crime decreasing, and increased risk of consequences will also discourage thug-wannabes from thugging.

Cracker Barrel parts with California-based firm behind logo, interior redesign

Restaurant chain Cracker Barrel on Thursday announced reorganizational and leadership changes that included dropping the consulting firm that was behind its controversial interior and logo changes.

Cracker Barrel faced heavy backlash earlier this year over the changes, which included a new logo that removed "Uncle Herschel" from it in favor of a text-only design. The company has since pulled both the revamped interior and logo.

Julie Masino will retain her role as the company's CEO and president, but the chain promoted other corporate employees to more prominent positions and brought back a former employee who will oversee its menu strategy.

Gee, ya think? :thatsright: Who thought it was a great idea to hire consultants based 2 or 3 thousand miles from where Cracker Barrel's customer core lives? :thatsright:

Federal judge to sentence Justice Brett Kavanaugh's attempted assassin

A judge is set to sentence Nicholas Roske on Friday for attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in the weeks leading up to the high court's landmark Dobbs decision.

The Department of Justice has asked for 30 years in prison, while Roske's attorneys have asked for eight years.

In a sentencing memorandum, prosecutors said Roske showed up at Kavanaugh's house on June 8, 2022, armed with a pistol, ammunition, a knife, a crowbar and tactical gear, intending to kill the conservative justice and other justices.

Two weeks prior to the sentencing hearing, Roske's attorneys also notified the court that while their client's name had not formally changed, Roske wanted to begin going by the name "Sophie" and female pronouns.

"Out of respect for Ms. Roske, the balance of this pleading and counsel’s in-court argument will refer to her as Sophie and use female pronouns," they wrote in court papers.

North Carolina governor signs criminal justice bill into law after Ukrainian refugee’s death

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s Democratic governor signed into law on Friday a criminal justice measure that the state’s Republican-controlled legislature approved in response to the stabbing death of a Ukrainian refugee on a Charlotte commuter train, even while opposing provisions within or wishing for others left out.

Gov. Josh Stein said he signed the bill because “it alerts the judiciary to take a special look at people who may pose unusual risks of violence before determining their bail. That’s a good thing.”

The new law bars cashless bail for certain violent crimes and for many repeat offenders. It also limits the discretion magistrates and judges have in making pretrial release decisions, gives the state chief justice the ability to suspend magistrates and seeks to ensure more defendants undergo mental health evaluations. But Stein had harsh criticism for other portions and said lawmakers had failed to approve his public-safety proposals, which included increased pay for law enforcement.

“I’m troubled by its lack of ambition or vision,” he said during a short video. “It simply does not do enough to keep you safe.” He also blasted a portion of a section that seeks to restart executions in North Carolina, where capital punishment was last carried out in 2006.

Outrage: Biden Judge Gives Kavanaugh Assassin Shocking Sentence, Praises Attacker's 'Transgenderism'

The man who attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has been sentenced to just eight years in prison after a Joe Biden-appointed judge took his "transgenderism" into account. In a stunning move, Judge Deborah Boardman grilled the Department of Justice on whether "Ms. Sophie Roske" will be placed in a women's prison and given hormone treatments. She also continually referred to Roske, who is a man, as a "she" throughout the proceedings.

We'll start there, but stick around, because it gets so much worse.

That's a shockingly light sentence for a would-be assassin, but Boardman wasn't done making a mockery of the court. In comments that I thought were parody at first, until I double-checked them, the judge went on to praise Roske's transgenderism, heralding the proceedings as a welcome event because it caused his parents to "accept their daughter for who she is."

I'm at a total loss, both because I'm dumbfounded and because I'm so infuriated. I've seen some crazy things come out of the mouths of judges over the years, and certainly that's escalated over the last several months of lawfare against the Trump administration. But I'm not sure I've ever seen something this psychotic from the bench.  Boardman actually suggested the attempted assassination of a Supreme Court justice was a good thing because it led to the "gender affirmation" of a deranged lunatic. It's not only a new level of absurdity, but she doesn't even attempt to hide her motives.

What do you even do with a judiciary that is this broken? I'm glad the upper levels of the court still appear to have some semblance of sanity remaining, but these lower-court judges are out of their minds. What's to stop every violent felon who comes before a Democrat-appointed judge from claiming to be transgender now?

I know impeaching judges is taboo, but man, maybe Republicans should actually try in this instance. I've never seen anything like this.
