I made it!

There have been many instances when I thought this would never be accomplished, but after 31 years in Florida I made it out.

I met my husband in college here in Virginia. We always said we would move back when we retired. After the youngest graduated from college in May, a shared light bulb went off. We both work fully remote jobs at virtual-first companies that will never force us into an office and don't care which state we live in. Our children are spread out from Boston to Tallahassee with the baby leaving for two years of grad school in China two weeks from today.

In a 10-week time span, we pulled off a move I thought would take at least a year to coordinate.

We closed yesterday, and I am sitting in my home office with beautiful trees outside my window and a definite sense of a lighter load. Florida has felt oppressive for many years, but I had no sense of the weight of it until today.

I'm home again.

And I’m sure, completely sure, Florida is better off for it.

Moving 600 or 700 miles from one state to another is a huge accomplishment? ::) I moved 800 or 900 from Phoenix to Silicon Valley and didn't think of it as THAT big a deal.

As for FL being "oppressive", has any DU-Denizen reminded Pacifist Patriot what letter is commonly appended after the names of VA's governor and lt. governor?

Two years for a PhD in China ... the US accreditation/recognition issues aside (US universities do not accept for credit under-graduate degrees from mainland Chinese universities), it would take 2-3 years of near-total immersion for an English speaker to learn Mandarin - vocabulary and tones - well enough to take university-level classes in China (a Level 3 certificate is required, IIRC, a mastery beyond the average non-university person "on the street")). Unless "the baby" has already acquired this degree of fluency, (s)he is probably taking classes in English in one of the huge eastern cities (e.g. Shanghai or Guangzhou or Beijing), i.e. an experience of life and culture in China deeper than a 2- or 4-week tourist, but not like that of a student in a city where westerners are uncommon.

I calculated our total net worth last week. I do this from time to time.
For some reason I can't stop thinking about it.
We've managed to make "making it" look silly.  :-)

Remember who you're talking about. To a DUchebag personal hygene is a huge accomplishment. Adulting is a huge accomplishment. In fact doing anything a normal person considers a part of normal living is a huge accomplishment to a DUchebag.

Yeah, I have a friend in Florida who said that he's throwing a "Thank God Another Stupid Anti-America Liberal Left Florida" Party. He says that I should be throwing a "Thank God Another Stupid Anti-American Liberal Passed Through Georgia and Kept Going" Party.
