Trump shuts down US base in Greece at request of Putin & Erdogan
https://defence-blog.com/trump-shuts-down-us-base-in-greece/ (https://defence-blog.com/trump-shuts-down-us-base-in-greece/)
U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly ordered the shutdown of the U.S. military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece, according to Greek newspaper Dimokratia.
The decision marked a shift in U.S. military strategy in the region and raised concerns among Greek officials.
The base in Alexandroupoli has been a key logistical hub for U.S. and NATO operations in southeastern Europe. Its presence had been a point of contention, particularly with Turkey, which has long opposed U.S. military operations in the region.
According to Greek media, Trump’s decision to dismantle the military presence in Alexandroupoli came after a joint request from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
As noted by the Greek newspaper, if confirmed, the move represents a diplomatic concession that could alter the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Greek press reports highlight that the closure is seen as a strategic loss for Greece, which has strengthened military ties with the U.S. in recent years. The Alexandroupoli base played a role in regional security and military logistics, particularly in supporting NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe.
The Trump administration has yet to officially comment on the reports, and it remains unclear whether the decision will be permanent or part of a broader realignment of U.S. military assets.

Sounds pretty serious. Except, the US has no military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece. The Greeks have a base there and Alexandroupoli has a strategically important port which the US has utilized, but there is no US base there. DU, of course, goes insane over this erroneous earth-shattering news. But eventually one of them actually does a little research:

Port of Alexandroupolis makes sustainment history with heavy brigade movement
By Sgt. 1st Class Terysa KingMarch 17, 2024
ALEXANDROUPOLIS, Greece – The Port of Alexandroupolis cemented another key moment for sustainment history as it facilitated the reception, staging, and onward movement of the first “heavy” brigade in Greece March 11, 2024. The 16th Sustainment Brigade and 598th
Transportation Brigade, with the help of Hellenic and Greek Allies, moved approximately 3,000 pieces of equipment off the cargo vessel Leroy A. Mendoca for the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division’s rotational deployment in Europe.

It’s a port. The only US base in Greece is Souda Bay in Crete. It is a Navy base.
Not only is this post not acknowledged, but it is the only post on the whole thread (which is up to 67 replies) which didn't immediately fall for this bit of fake news hook, line and sinker. But then again, they are the smartest people on the internet.

40. Not seeing this in any news outlets that seem like reasonable sources

This doesn't seem to be verifiable from any news sources that I might trust not to say it's not true just seems like it would be picked up by more international media if it was true, potentially it could be misinformation or disinformation until we see it confirmed somewhere else

That's 35 Replies worth of "eventually". DU-folk are so enslaved by their Hate-Trump confirmation bias that they probably never even went to GoogMaps to find where the city is. :rotf:
As for narrative-contradicting facts being ignored, that's what Progs do, ignore facts and continue parroting the false narrative until a new false narrative is concocted.

I'm old enough to remember when DU wanted all overseas bases closed because of "imperialism." Now they can't even abide shutting down one that doesn't exist (but I bet funding to it exists anyway).

Imperialism, colonialism, the military industrial complex, military adventurism, jingoism, domestic priorities would be a better use of the money, etc., etc., etc.

And you wonder why DoD can't pass a single audit in 21 years. They're funding bases that don't exist and failing to feed the soldiers with the money extracted extorted from their meager paychecks for the purpose.
That whole department is ****ed up as a football bat.

Where were these idiots when the Army closed down who knows how many bases in Italy and Greece and Turky in the late 1980's? All of the missile sites that my base was a part of were closed down because of the START treaties.

In focusing on the absurdity in DU-Denizens swallowing the existence of an imaginary US military base I missed this turd-gem:

1. Were Putin and Erdogan so hand-in-glove, Turkey would have let Russia's Baltic Fleet reinforce its largely permanently submerged Black Sea Fleet.

I was actually stationed at Souda Bay (NavCommDet), '74-'77. There was, at the time, a compliment of 125 people total (aircraft repair, air traffic controllers etc.). Most exciting things that happened while I was there was Henry Kissinger landed enroute to somewhere to refuel (he never got off the plane), it snowed one winter, I got married, and a U.S. jet took off at night. That sucker let loose his afterburner and was GONE...
Other activities were pretty much alcohol related..
