My son has a cast on his arm. Being the incredible genius he is, he just got into the shower without his plastic cover thingy on and it is soaked now. Water is dripping from the inside of it. Does anyone know what you are supposed to do in a situation like this? This is our first cast ever so I am clueless. :thatsright:

How much longer does he need to keep it on?
Honestly, if he has to keep it on longer than a few more days, I'd probably go back and get another one, because it will start really smelling before long...the cotton wrapping inside is wet, and it be just like leaving clothes in a washer too long...musty and moldy smelling.

GO TO THE DOCTOR NOW! I have a horror story about a wet cast. I was 15 and had broken my leg and was in a full cast. I got into the shower with one of those heavy duty plastic cast bags over it and I even kept my leg dangling over the side and I still managed to get it wet.
I ended up in horrible pain and nearly got an incredible skin infection from the moisture. Imagine the pain of a foot blister from wearing uncomfortable shoes and walking in them all day long. Multiply that by 1000. I couldn't even lay still it hurt so bad.
It was over the Fourth of July so we (unwisely) waited and I woke my mom up in the middle of the night because the pain was so bad. The E.R. docs had to cut a "window" out of my cast to see how bad the damage was. They didn't want to re-cast me because I had just had reconstructive surgery. The left the "window" (over the top of foot across my ankle) open and the skin was in really bad condition from the water. It was disgusting.
I ended up having to be sedated and re-cast a week later. It set me back several weeks and I have some lovely scars from the skin trauma.
I know my story sounds horrific, but my cast didn't even feel wet to me. I had no idea water had somehow leaked into it.
Call the doctor asap.

DixieBelle has good advice. I'd call the doc right away. I had my foot in a cast and the doc also told me to never get it wet. Sadly, I did get it wet and they had to recast me.

I told hubby I could cut it in two and dry it and then later duct tape it back up. He laughed at me. I have a dremel and I know I could have done it with a tile saw on there. The doctor said I could have done that and just taken him in on Monday instead of having to sit in the ER for hours tonight. Anyway they took the cast off and it was disgusting under there. It smelled like ass and feet. He has a temporary splint on now and will have to get it recast on Monday. I am hungry for mushrooms now though. :-)

Don't feel bad! We had no idea when my cast got wet. You always hear "don't submerge this, don't get any water in it...." from the doctors but they never really tell you how horrible it will be. I bet my doctor used my as an example to his other patients though! "Let me tell you what will happen if you DO get this wet...." :-)
