How Trump affected my family
My mother, now 91, is an evangelical who voted for Trump every time. During the first round of this political nightmare, I tried to talk to her, but she literally covered her ears and said, “la la la la.” Growing up with her was incredibly challenging, and I have immense respect for my dad (now long gone) for managing to navigate life with her.
When my sister and I reached adolescence, she looked at us as if we had grown horns. She told me she hated me and that I was an accident, which fractured our relationship for decades. Communication was minimal at best. But when I got married and started a family, things shifted. For a while, she treated me like a real daughter, and I finally experienced what it felt like to have a mother.
It was wonderful—while it lasted. But then Trump came along and shattered it all.
I could blame her for the rift, but I know she endured an unimaginably harsh childhood. Her faith is like a life raft in a storm, something she clings to with every ounce of her being. Yet, that faith has also become a wall between us. When I visit her now, religious dogma blasts from every room, making even a short visit emotionally draining.
This Thanksgiving, my sister drove 250 miles to be with the family, but at the last minute, we were punished for expressing our fears about the future. We weren’t hostile; we simply shared how scared we are. Mom decided not to come to my house for Thanksgiving.
She later told us that, for a time, she had prioritized family over God—but she wouldn’t make that mistake again. It feels like we’re back to her old ways. She explained that she voted for Trump because he’s the “biblical candidate.” While she admits he’s flawed, she believes his policies align with scripture. She also brought up the story of the Tower of Babel, insisting that God doesn’t want globalism.
I hate Trump. I hate religious dogma. But I love my mom and am heartbroken.

That sounds somewhat like the DUmmies' action when they hear a fact that doesn't fit with their made up "truth".
I realize most of the DUmmie stories are made up BS to make themselves look better amongst their animal friends, but I really do feel for sane parents who have offspring who are DUmmies.

Trump had zero effect on OP's family. OP's reaction to Trump is what affected the family.
