I am in the process of becoming a zoo volunteer (they require a tetnus shot and tb test) and after the interview with the lady in charge of the program I went to see the new baby elephant.
He is a cute little boy even at 3 weeks. He likes to lay down in his mom's hay though. He sleeps a lot too.
The mom is Rose-tu, who is 14 and unmarried.
Portland has a very successful elephant breeding program. We play Montivani on the loudspekers in the elephant house, and give them champagne. I am not sure about that, but they are doing something right.
I went up there on my bike, and I am proud of doing that in itself. It is quite a long way up from the river to the zoo. The ride down, you get a nice breeze.

Cool! You and SLW can compare elephant notes!!

What fun!!!
There are volunteers at the zoo here that take care of the monkey babies....feeding, cuddling, rocking them.
There's also a very nice long waiting list!

I was lucky enough to be able to take care of a baby chimp, Hugo. It was so fun to go in at night, when I was the only person in the zoo other than the rangers, and take care of the little chimp. He was so cute when he played with the baby toys. It was really something to try to change his diapers. Those little guys are soooo strong.

Portland has such a good zoo and one of the best elephant programs in the country. I have a little gold Christmas ornament with a baby elephant and the words "Pachy" on it. It was from the Portland zoo. I have a little Christmas tree with only little gold colored metal ornaments from zoos all over. The majority have an elephant theme.
Did they name the baby yet? There's nothing cuter than a baby elie. Our little boy will be 16 years old. It seems like yesterday when I was an elephant midwife, going to the zoo after hours and watching for signs of elie labor. I got to do it over the last couple years for the 2 new baby elies we have.
Enjoy your volunteer duties. I also have to take an annual TB test, as I'm an animal handler. They worry about transmission between the volunteers and animals and vice versa.
