Fareed Zakaria Suspended For Plagiarism: Time Editor, CNN Host Apologizes For 'Terrible Mistake'

Time editor-at-large and CNN host Fareed Zakaria was suspended from both places for a month on Friday after admitting to lifting parts of a story from the New Yorker.

Conservative media watchdog Newsbusters was the first to spot the similarities between a Zakaria piece on gun control and an article by Jill Lepore that appeared in the New Yorker in April.

I guess adding quote marks and saying something like, "As Jill Lepore said in New Yorker" magazine ...," is just too much exertion for Zakaria. Or maybe he just thinks he's too high up the MSM food chain to acknowledge Jill Lepore's work. H/T to HuffPo for actually acknowledging the work of Newsbusters.

Dem bill in California would mandate judges to consider race when doling out prison sentences

A Democrat-backed bill making its way through the California Legislature would require judges in the state to consider a convicted criminal's race when determining how long to sentence them to prison.

Assembly Member Reggie Jones-Sawyer, the Democratic chair of the California Assembly's Public Safety Committee, quietly introduced Bill 852 in February. The Assembly went on to pass the little-known legislation in May, and the measure is currently being considered in the state Senate.

The bill would add a section to the Penal Code of California requiring courts, whenever they have the authority to determine a prison sentence, to "rectify" alleged racial bias in the criminal justice system by taking into account how historically persecuted minorities are affected differently than others.

Patently unconstitutional on its face.

City to Distribute Foil, Straws, Snorting Kits to Drug Addicts

Health officials in Portland, Oregon announced last week they will begin handing out tin foil, straws and snorting kits to drug addicts throughout the city.

As part of its “Harm Reduction Program,” the Multnomah County Health Department announced Friday that drug paraphernalia will be offered to those using fentanyl and other hard drugs, KOIN 6 reported.

The rise of fentanyl has decreased the need for needle-focused “harm reduction” services, Department spokeswoman Sarah Dean told the Willamette Week. Since fentanyl is smoked rather than injected, clinic visits have dropped 60% since 2019, Dean said.

If his name were Frank Zachary rather than Fareed Zakaria, he's already be summarily fired.

I had to go some digging to see what all the hubbub was about, but yup – Flavortown about to go down if it’s up to the Left.

I mean, it’s Meltdownostan in the comments and I had no idea what had happened.

Honestly – Guy Fieri is like THE cheerfulest, most annoying, good-hearted, innocuous person on earth, and THIS set them off…”this” being what exactly?

Fieri's "sin" in this seems to be that he was pleasant with Trump. I've watched more than a few of Fieri's various shows, and he gives zero clues as to his politics. He may be Prog, he maybe conservative, he may be libertarian ... who knows (or cares, DU-grade Progs and their mirror image among conservatives, assuming such exist). As for Anthony Bourdain, to whom Progs look for support for their poutrage, he was not exactly an example of excellence.

Psychology professor's paper on ROGD was withdrawn under pressure
https://hotair.com/john-s-2/2023/07/10/auto-draft-158-n563679

Quote
The Free Press published a piece today written by Northwestern University professor Michael Bailey. Bailey writes that he’s been a professor for 34 years and often delved into controversial topics including IQ, sexual orientation and transgenderism. Recently, he co-authored a paper on the topic of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria which was published in March. Essentially, ROGD is the idea that the sharp uptick in young people, especially teen girls, identifying as trans is partly the result of social contagion.

ROGD was first described in the literature in 2018 by the physician and researcher Lisa Littman. It is an explanation of the new phenomenon of adolescents, largely girls, with no history of gender dysphoria, suddenly declaring they want to transition to the opposite sex. It has been a highly contentious diagnosis, with some—and I am one—thinking it’s an important avenue for scientific inquiry, and others declaring it’s a false idea advocated by parents unable to accept they have a transgender child.

I believed that ROGD was a promising explanation of the explosion of gender dysphoria among adolescent girls because these young people do not have gender dysphoria as usually understood. Until recently, females treated for gender dysphoria were masculine-presenting girls who had hated being female since early childhood. By contrast, girls with ROGD are often conventionally feminine, but tend to have other social and emotional issues. The theory behind ROGD is that through social contagion from friends, social media, and even school, vulnerable girls are exposed to the idea that their normal adolescent angst is the result of an underlying transgender identity. These girls then suddenly declare that they are transgender. That is the rapid onset…

There is ample evidence that in progressive communities, multiple girls from the same peer group are announcing they are trans almost simultaneously. There has been a sharp increase in this phenomenon across the industrialized West. A recent review from the UK, which keeps better records than America, showed a greater than tenfold increase in referrals of adolescent girls during just the past decade.

There is no doubt it is social contagion. Teenagers are prone to social contagion.

Larry Nassar stabbed in altercation at federal prison, sources say
https://www.foxnews.com/sports/larry-nassar-stabbed-multiple-times-altercation-federal-prison

Quote
Larry Nassar, the disgraced former sports doctor who was convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was stabbed during an altercation with another inmate at a Florida federal prison, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The attack occurred Sunday at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Sumterville, sources told Fox News. The Associated Press first reported about the incident.

Nassar was stabbed multiple times, according to a person familiar with the attack. Joe Rojas, a current and longtime employee of the prison and current president of the local union, told Fox News that Nassar was stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest.

Rojas also said that it was his understanding that Nassar suffered a collapsed lung and that he was in stable condition. He also added he believes the prison is understaffed.

They do not look to kindly to scum like Larry Nassar.

The attackers' aim was high. OTOH, maybe, being just 60 (in a few weeks),  for a decade or two he'll enjoy whatever lingering physical effects he has from the stabbings while continually looking over his shoulders fearing more attackers. Should be good for restful sleep, too.

Fieri's "sin" in this seems to be that he was pleasant with Trump. I've watched more than a few of Fieri's various shows, and he gives zero clues as to his politics. Just got done binge-watching Bourdain's No Reservations - all 8 seasons of it. I'm not sure what your vision of "excellence" is, insofar foodies are concerned, but Bourdain did his own writing, which was excellent in my opinion. I'm not sure Fieri does any of that.

Bourdain simply didn't put up with nonsense (when he wasn't eating or drinking to excess). I have no problem with that, though there is no doubt that Bourdain's politics were leftist. He made no bones about that either.

Fieri, with his California roots and his spiked, bleached hair, sunglasses, bling, and other trademarks of that state, likes everything he eats -- except for eggs, chitlins (and other entrails) and liver & onions. Bourdain ate all of that and then some - the most disgusting thing he said he ever ate on a show was in Mozambique when he accompanied some bush hunters as they hunted down a warthog -- then proceeded to eat its asshole, some of which Bourdain (admittedly puke-worthy) sampled.
