Should a woman be allowed to abort a gay fetus?
This is grade A flame material and I hope this can be rationally discussed. If people get too crazy I'm deleting this.
So...
In wikipedia it says that over 90% of fetus diagnosed with Down's Syndrome are aborted in the US.
Persons with Down's have reduced IQ, other health problems and reduced life expectancy. I don't think many around here would object to the choice to abort.
As it stand right now a woman in the first trimester can abort for any reason. Her body, her choice. The high percentage of Down's abortions is due to the burdens of caring for a special needs person as well as a perceived diminished life of a person with Down's (although, to be fair, those with Down's are probably happy they are alive).
So how do we get to aborting gay fetuses? Well if you (like me) think there is a genetic component to being gay. The science is right around the fringes of this right now but I would bet in ten years there will be genetic testing for the likelihood of a child being gay. (And realize that there are false positives and false negatives in all genetic testing). What would you think about a woman who chose to abort a fetus just because it was going to be gay? What if so many women made that choice that "gay culture" (such as that is) is greatly reduced? Should there be laws restricting genetic testing of these "gay genes"?
Where do I stand? Her body, her choice. And try to educate people not to hate.

This means the end of California as we know it. The state would lose half its electoral votes.

3. You hope this can be rationally discussed? At DU? Rational discussion?
I hope to get a million-dollar check in the mail very soon.

No such thing, no way to test it. Even if there were a way to test for it, no.

Object? Hell, at DU it would be cause for celebration.

I'm glad as someone pro-life, I don't have conundrums like this to deal with. While I very much dispute the idea that at least ALL gay people have genetic basis for being gay, I still think the portion that are and can be found out to be so early on, should be entitled to life like any other unborn child. I do think though that if this is indeed a genetic abnormality, there should be efforts made to CORRECT the abnormality of the parent wishes and research should be ongoing to this end. That would provide another sticky place for liberals: if gay can be corrected at a genetic level, should a viable cure be found...after all aren't gays telling us all the time they wouldn't choose to be gay? This to me implies that if they could change themselves at the core, they would. I have a feeling though that liberals would find any effort to change homosexuals as homophobic, even when there is scientific evidence of a mutation in the genes and that it is something that could indeed be treated.
This should get interesting.

The way that mole danced around that DU hot button subject, the mole should be on "Dancing With The Stars".

If ever they find the "gay gene," watch how quickly Roe V. Wade gets a bunch of new opponents. :whatever:

People with Down's syndrome have tended to approach the level of expectations that their parents and teachers have for them, and these expectations have been based on marginally surmounting the upper limits of professional expectation in each generation.

And they call us intolerant?

I guess a "Gay lump of cells" is different than any other "lump of cells".

Of course it had to be locked. If it had been allowed to develop, the 5 or 6 DUers who still have functioning brain cells might have had to actually think through a moral stance. Can't have that!!! ::)

This should be re-framed as "should a liberal woman be allowed to abort any child?"
I mean, children of liberals who grow up as liberals have an extremely low IQ and tend to be obese and have significant drug and alcohol problems.
We know they legally can, but this is a *gasp* MORAL question.
As always, moral equivalency works in the Conservatives' favor.

I know that women abort for all sorts of reasons, and this is one where I could certainly see that yes, they would.
After a lifetime of hearing from the GLBT crowd how 'hard' and 'scary' their lives are? WHY would we want to subject a child to that?
(only partially sarcastic on this one..)
